Why do they do this? Why arent the tops of dams designed to stand up to water overtopping?

Toledo Bend isn't just some small beaver damn. If it ever broke it would take out thousands of people in hours. It's a major hydroelectric structure.

Have you ever been to the dam? It's huge. Do you realize what it would do to towns on both sides of the state line if the dam gave way? It would flood into parts of Lake Charles and Beaumont.

We have had a camp on Toledo since I was 8. It floors me when people don't realize how big that reservoir is. It's HUGE!! If that dam ever broke it would be nuclear. It's Hoover on a smaller scale but only in depth. It holds back a huge volume of water.

Absolutely. And yea we have had a camp up there my whole life. And yea it floors me when people can't understand basic things. I am a civil engineer so it just makes sense to me and always has, I forget a lot of people don't understand these kinds of things.

Used to fish up there all the time. If that damn gave out you can pretty much kiss everything within a mile of either side of the Sabine from Toledo to lake Chuck adios

This is last spring during the historic flood. That's just one set of gates.

Current radar shows Toledo and areas around getting dumped on.

Anacoco Lake is getting high from pics I saw on Facebook.

I was checking it out this morning. That's a shite-ton of water to make rise that fast, but they can drop it faster.

Amazing piece of engineering!

My cousin lives in Orange. At lunch today, they were just a couple if inches from getting water in their house and were basically trapped in the subdivision. I hope it receded enough for them to get out because this will eclipse them. I've tried texting but haven't heard back.

if she would have rebuilt in the same spot she would have flooded again.

Why would anyone do that? Why would an insurance company or FEMA pay out without the requirement to rebuild outbof harms way? Rhetorical questions.

There is only one "set" of gates. There are 11 gates in all. Currently all 11 are open 3 feet. During last year's flood, all 11 were open 22 feet.
