Learned to drive in a 3 speed stick. Nothing more exciting than to stop on an incline at a red light, and then proceed.

The manuals they make now have a mechanism for not immediately going into neutral when you take your foot off the break on an incline. I don't know shite about how any of that works but I do know how to drive a stick and that was a revelation to discover.

I have it in my car and I believe they have labeled as "hill assist," also I am a milennial and prefer manual vehicles.

I have close friends who still write with fountain pens

I am in my 40s and I don't know nor do I care what this says about me, but I write almost exclusively with a fountain pen. I am the guy that always has a pen on me unless I am doing something outside or working out, it's part of my EDC. I don't have any manual transmission vehicles currently but some of the best enjoyed trucks/cars have been manuals.

Stopping on hills with a manual is only a problem if the driver doesn't know how to heel and toe.

My previous post should not be read as a knock on people who write with fountain pens. My handwriting is an odd print/cursive hybrid which has irregular strokes not ideal for using a fountain pen. I also routinely carry a pen in the inside of my suit jacket, and if a pen happened to leak through, I might murder someone

But with that said, I completely understand why some people choose to write with a fountain pen, in the same way that I understand why some people choose to drive a car with a manual transmission. I just think mocking people for not doing the latter makes as much sense as mocking people for not doing the former.

Todays tranny's are awesome, but the old 4 speed Muncie’s with a Hurst shifter are still a lot of fun today.

I’ll turn 29 next week and I can drive a stick, a 2 stick 18 wheeler, and a column shift (3 on the tree)

Grew up working on a farm that had older trucks on it

Also, anyone who pines over using a manual transmission in their daily beater is basically the hipster of the automotive world.

I use one every day to get to and from work on I-285. Honestly, it gives me something to do besides just sitting there for 30 minutes.

to have a fraction more control over their endeavors

Whether it's hotshot drivers, NASCAR/race car drivers, 18 wheelers, dump trucks, etc., there's a reason professional drivers overwhelmingly utilize a manual transmission, and ESPECIALLY people doing heavy towing.

fraction more control

Pro Tip: Regarding consumer-grade, non-professionals and aside from the most elite supercar transmissions where the problem is not that the manual transmission concept is flawed, but that the operator is usually not able to utilize the manual transmission to match the car's performance like a supercar's automatic transmission can, a manual transmission offers far more than a "fraction" more of control-especially trucks that are capable/ones that do alot of hauling. In every case except the $500k supercars, a manual transmission is superior in so many ways that trying to explain them to a novice like yourself would be futile unless you've had years of driving experience, coupled with record-setting amounts of testosterone injection therapy.

Although,

became more sophisticated

Is a good starting point for you to begin your studies of the many benefits of a consumer vehicle having a standard transmission. I recommend you look into why your opinion above is flawed when your mind is relaxed- perhaps after your pilates class tonight.

Aside from all the other benefits of a manual transmission, if it only offered a fraction more of control, then the aforementioned drivers above would've long-since stopped using it.

Pro tip #2: A manual transmission offers FULL control of a machine. Don't believe me? Try to get from point A to point B without shifting the gears and let me know how it goes. (I recommend an aftermarket stick shift knob of the smallest diameter so that your small hands can get a good grip around it. This will decrease your odds of inevitably failing the test above.)

Sorry you can't drive a manual transmission like your wife's bull, though.

Automatics are becoming more common in heavy over the road trucks and you can't buy a 1 ton diesel truck with a manual.

While I enjoy driving a manual, your argument is dumb and wrong.

Go fondle the truck nutz on your 7.3 4 speed 'stroke.
