Had the honor of going to those beaches and cemetery twice. Words cannot explain how powerful it is. Every American needs to go at least once.

Got to go two years ago. Incredible, humbling place. As you near the coast the houses are flying French and American flags.
When you pull into the cemetery lot and they say "you're now on American soil"...
Dusty in here just typing that....

Doubtful.
Joseph Stalin was sitting on Operation Bagration until the Allies opened up a "second front" in France. Had the landings failed, it is more likely that Stalin would have made a separate peace with Hitler.

Humbling place to visit...there is a very warm feeling towards Americans there. It is an incredible thing to walk on the beaches, put your hands on the hedge hogs or bunkers, walk in the bunkers and stand where all those men came ashore. Was there 6 Jun 2023. Simply amazing.

Cant imagine what these guys were thinking, knowing they were probably gonna be killed.

quote:Your post made me recall what U.S. Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, told French President Charles deGaulle in 1966 when deGaulle ordered that all American troops be removed from French soil: "Does that include the dead Americans in military cemeteries as well?"
One day I want to go to the cemetery in Normandy.
DeGaulle didn't answer him and just got up and walked out of the room.

I usually go to the museum every year. Last year was such a major drop off in veterans for obvious reasons. We need to soak up their stories while we still can

I know it's not D-Day related, but check out SOGCast: Untold Stories of MAC V SOG. It's a brain dump from the Vietnam vets (Green Berets, pilots, etc.) we're getting closer to losing. I wish Jocko would have thought of it earlier.

I have pondered this for a few years. Its the same conundrum as those in WWI who "went over the top"
Most said they focused on their pals and duty to force themselves through it, but I dont know how you ever expect those people to fit in civil society again.

Had a chance in November 2022 to visit Normandy. What a somber site looking at the grave markers, the beaches they had to scale etc. Thank you, D-Day veterans, for your courage and sacrifice in liberating Western Europe and defeating Nazi Germany. We are eternally grateful.
