I’m pretty sure those decisions were a result of top Nazi officials trying to placate an increasingly insane Hitler. They likely knew it was stupid but Hitler became hysterical during the 2nd half of the war and wouldn’t listen to anyone

1. Hitler’s decision to take the city was his own. The city could have been bypassed to the South. The Germans didn’t need Stalingrad. All they needed was to cutoff river traffic south of Stalingrad.

2. OKH decision to place “allied” armies on the flanks of 6th Army was mostly due to a lack of options. The Italian, Hungarian, and Romanian armies were not capable of spearheading or really even taking an active role in a rapid mechanized advance, which was the main goal of Army Group South with their dive to the Soviet oil fields in the Caucasus. All the “allied” armies were seen capable of doing was securing 6th Army’s flanks as it approached and secured the city. But even this was beyond their capacity.

3. Goering’s claim of being able to supply 6th Army from the air was pure bullshite to try to impress Hitler. He knew they couldn’t come close to keeping 6th Army supplied.

4. Paulus’ decision to not breakout toward 4th Panzer Army in December was due to Hitler. Paulus was a trained General Staff officer. He knew a battlefield commander could countermand orders if the condition on the battlefield justified such action. But as 4th Panzer approached the city Paulus refused to move. Some of his subordinate officers had already staged forces in early December to where all that was needed was orders form Paulus to be given. He chose to stay and relegate his army to surrender roughly two months later.

Midway sealed Japan’s fate. The number of carriers they lost that day could not be replaced fast enough to match the US production. Likewise , they lost many of their best and most experienced pilots that day , who would also not be replaced. It was a matter of time from that point forward as

Generation War is set on the Eastern Front and is pretty good. I think it was on Amazon, not sure if it still is.

Cool post. I like the history stuff too. And yes, a Band of Brothers style show about Stalingrad would be awesome! But probably won't happen. Russians still aren't exactly good guys right now

Tuntematon Sotilas (Unknown Soldier)
2017- 5 part series in Finnish, little over 3 hour movie in English version. 7 million dollar budget, most expensive Finnish movie ever made. Follows some Finnish troops against the Russians in the Continuation War.

While extremely low budget by USA standards I have found this to be an excellent movie/series. It is the 2nd remake of this film (so 3 versions) which is based on a book written in the 40s. The same book is what the movie "The Thin Red Line" is based off of.

Bonus- this movie set a Guinness World Record for largest explosion in cinema history.

Not nearly as good as BoB, The Pacific, even Gen Kill, but considering the budget and fine acting I give it a "must see" rating.

I think the Soviets’ main strategy was to overwhelm the other side with bodies so they’d eventually run out of ammo. Their strategy certainly did not place a high value on the lives of the foot soldiers.

Um...D-Day was pretty damned important.

Battle of Britain made sure the Allies had air superiority over the English Channel, which made D-Day possible.

Hell, when Case Blue was initially launched he shifted 4th Panzer Army from one sector of the front to another so many times it spent more time marching than it did fighting.

I think to be effective, you have to realize you're already dead and let it go. This is what I get from talking to old timers about WWII.

Sometimes it just works in your favor.

Thankfully the Soviet Union won and thereby saved thousands of American, British, and Canadian lives.

Winning the Battle of Britain ensured D-Day would take place in France and not in the UK.

Lose BoB and Germany invades ultimately ceding Western Europe to Germany

Lose Normandy and we try again in 1946

Check out Generation War. It’s a German mini series about a group of friends during WWII. Some of the combat scenes in Russia aren’t bad.

I was waiting on this post from you. I enjoy your history threads so please keep em coming

Imo the most influential battle in all of WW2 with midway and Battle of Britain right behind. I’ve always been fascinated with the eastern front due to sheer mass of armies opposing each other. The Germans logistics at this point were an absolute wreck and were their ultimate undoing

Eh Army Group B badly needed to take Stalingrad in order to anchor it's flank on the Don and Volga. The Don and Kalmyk Steppes have almost no defensible terrain outside of the rivers and the bridgeheads the Soviets held were critical for staging Uranus.

The failure of Case Blue does not lie in any operational decision, the failure is that Army Group South simply did not have the resources to ever reach its strategic objectives.

The 1993 Stalingrad is even better in my opinion. It follows the German side of the war. Check it out if you haven't already.
