I just listened to The Rest is History podcast on it the other day, they had a 5 or 6 part series that was really good

President Lincoln was also shot on this date... But 160 years ago. I bet there were people on the Titanic who remembered Lincoln being shot.

My G-Grandmother, when she was in her 90’s with Alzheimer’s, me maybe 5-6. “Do you remember May? She was just a child. Bless her heart she went down with the Titanic.”

Walk outside and walk right back in, same question. That’s all really all remember about her is asking that question over and over and over again. Rip May

A lot has been made over the years about how the Titanic didn’t have enough lifeboats. But it actually had more lifeboats than was required by law at the time.

The rationale at that time was the ship itself was its own lifeboat. The idea was if the ship did begin to sink, it would do so slowly. The lifeboats would be used to ferry the passengers to another ship summoned to render aid. But they never considered (1) the ship could sink in just roughly two hours or (2) a nearby ship would ignore a distress signal.
