You must be identifying as a professor today with that lecture. As one goes through life one faces obstacles that cause physical and emotional pain. So, you interact with people who were hurt in a motorcycle accident and you are upset because they complain because they are hurting?

"Pushing the envelope and testing your limits" may not have been the cause of an accident involving a motorcycle. In most cases it is the other driver who is at fault. Not that it matters at all - if someone gets injured for any reason they deserve the best medical care possible without "the help" complaining and judging them

I believe all patients should be treated with compassion.

What ticks me off most about being in the motorcycle community is the constant barrage of people wanting money to pay for their hospital bills, funerals, or to repair their bikes through rides and kick starters.

I got good insurance to make sure my family doesn't have to beg for money because of the risks I take, I damn sure won't pay for other riders to take these risks with no back up plan.

There are a couple of issues with your post.

1. You are walking a very fine line with confidentiality. Lots of people read this board. People have friends and family. Do the math. You lose if this becomes an issue.

2. You don't become omnipotent because you work in an ICU. We all make mistakes that have consequences.

3. It's a proven fact that if you spend time with patients they require less pain meds and have a more positive outcome. Try it. It makes a difference.

I don't feel that way about anyone unless they have contributed greatly to the reason they are in the ICU.
First. Take into account that is this is an anonymous message board and I'm listening all night to a grown man whine when he had more than fifty percent responsibility for why he is here. Yes I'm bitching. I admit it. Doesn't mean I'm not good at my job. Just some things are hard to take. THIS guy is hard to take.
People wind up here for many reasons and I treat them all the same.
When a patient is acting an arse. Because he can't take the consequences of his own actions then my sympathy/empathy slides. It's a Matter of the golden rule. You get what you give. And if you give me just a little respect and some effort I'll take you as far as I can. And that can be a pretty long way. I'm not talking about children. I don't do kids. Adults know better or should.
The "here hold my beer and watch this" crowd frequently are the ones who can't handle the consequences.
I don't have anything against motorcycle riders. By and large good guys the ones I've known. But they know what they are doing and accept the risk. Protect themselves appropriately or accept the risk of not doing so i.e.:helmet laws.
As far as male vs female nurses. You might howl if you saw them. But if you'd risk a trip to the ICU looking for women to hit on then I don't know what to say. Good looking nurses when you have catheter in place probably not that much fun. You're not getting laid anyway

At least those guys are alive.

Out here they just recently had a guy die in a motorcycle accident. Guy only owned the motorcycle for a week and his wife did NOT want him getting one. He was on his way to his son's baseball practice when it happened. Now 3 kids are without a daddy.

I find motorcycle enthusiasts and nurses to be about equally intolerable. Y'all seriously are the worst groups of people.

If there's a nurse or there that has a motorcycle, you're a bad person.

How do you feel about nursing on a scooter?

Found the problem. 100% guarantee the guy wasn't wearing proper riding gear. Middle aged Harley guys really are the worst.

Since you don't know what you're talking about, that's a good idea.

I agree with you.

Be the man you were trying to be on that bike.

I cringe every time I see that Gieco commercial where the girl or guy gets a new bike after they totaled the old one. One doesn't simply 'total a bike'. You're paying for some of that...one way or another.

My father was/is a physical therapist and the stories the bikers would tell...one of them told me, no shite, Never let a woman know how much money you have, she'll pour hot grease in your ear when you're sleeping and ride off with it. Yea.
