My advice to motorcycle riders...

Quit going to beautiful, relaxing places, without your damn muffler. Nobody thinks you're badass. Nobody thinks you're cool. We think you're an inconsiderate douchebag. And it just makes people hate you, and pity your desperate need for attention.

A few weeks back I was driving and this dickwad on the loudest bike I ever heard pulls up beside me and then guns it and slows down as he pulls along side the car in front of me, then guns it and goes to the next guy. So loud, it was super annoying.

Bike comes along a guy in a dually with Texas plates. Guns it and goes forward. Then a light catches us and we all stop. The guy in the dually just eases right up next to the biker and then floors it when the exhaust was right at him. Keeps the throttle up for a good 15-20 seconds while completely covering the biker in black soot.

As I drove by the biker was trying to get that crap out of his eyes so he probably never saw the bird I shot at him while I drove by.

That's why I said likely, sometimes you never know who is posting behind that screen name.

Bingo. You're exactly right. It's not what you ride, it's that you ride. I'll never understand all the hostility some have got "idiot cruiser riders", or "idiot crotch rocket riders" or whatever. The choice in style of bike is nothing more than what suites that person, it has nothing to do with their intellect or character. Personally, I rode dirt bikes as a kid and got my first street bike when I was 14. Most of my life I've been a cruiser rider and now I've moved on to a touring bike (that's my bike in my sig pic). But I've never once though my choice in bike made me somehow "better" than someone who prefers a different style motorcycle.

Not all stripes are created equal. The kind of stripes that involve sagging pants, motorcycles or scrubs all seem to have a greater frequency of dicks.

My wife has been a physician for 33 years, she agrees with the OP, the worst possible patients are those who are victims of their own stupidity, such as life long smokers that now have COPD, are dragging around oxygen tanks, not being able to breath, whining, and complaining that their healthcare providers are not doing anything to help them.

You answered how you can understand in your next post.

That's why one of my groups logos was the crappy drawn bag of dicks meme riding an equally crappy drawn motorcycle.

The only dick was the a-hole who had a bike with an 120 decibel exhaust.

There is no reason for that. I despise assholes like him just like I do with some body who has their radio up that loud.

I have no problem with bikers (even bicyclists) who obey the traffic laws and drive responsibly. This guys exhaust was not responsible, and his purposefully driving up to another car then gassing it was done to show everybody how cool he was. He wasn't cool. He was an a-hole.

Obviously the OP went well over your head. He has seen first hand what most adults know....actions have consequences and many think accidents always happen to the other guy.....ie: not me because I'm smarter than most!

I agree 100%. And I say that as a lifelong biker myself. I personally can't stand guys like that because they give the rest of us a bad reputation nd make us all look like assholes. Trust me, we're not all like that guy.

Everyone would be much better riders had they learned on dirt when they were young. If you can keep a bike up in bad conditions, you are far better off than those idiot cruiser riders who talk about having to lay her down.

I'd rather go a different route than you, I would like to see everyone start out on mopeds or small size dual sport bikes. If every vehicle operator was forced to start on these machines, you can bet their arse they would be watching for them a lot more and be much more considerate vehicle operators.

I'd also like to see tiered licenses, cut out all these squid dipshits that go out and buy 1000cc sportbikes as a first bike and proceed to splash their guts all over the ground. The bigger killer by far is other vehicle operators though, having everyone start on one would reduce a lot of motorcycle deaths.

That's what I did...road on dirt/trails when I was a kid (first bike was an old Yamaha GT-80). Waited till I was mid-30s to get my license and ride on the road. Started with one of the old import tariff Shadows, then moved up to a 1500cc Vulcan after about 3 years of riding. Took Rider Safety Course when I began on the streets. Rode for 10 years without ever having to lay one down (combination of luck and risk aversion).

I have relatives who race bikes competitively...so I'm not anti-sport bike. I am anti-sport bike while wearing flip-flops and cutoff jeans doing wheelies with your teenage girlfriend on the back.

IMHO...rules for riding:

1. Wait till you are 35 before you ride
2. Dress for the slide instead of the ride.

quote:

1. Completely disagree
2. Completely agree

Now as for why I disagree with #1. As you age, your reflexes slow down dramatically. On top of that, you're less likely to ride to your physical limitations as you get older.
Not that anyone should be pushing their limits on the streets, but when a car cuts you off, you need to know how to handle that bike.

Had I waited until now to start riding, I would never be capable of dragging a knee through a corner at 100+ mph. Not saying that like I'm a badass, but if a car jerks out in front of me, I have a much better chance of leaning that bike over and getting out of the way. I've taken the time and learned my limits on a bike and how far I can push it. I know how to react to things and it's 2nd nature to me.
Let someone that's 35+ and only year or so of experience on a bike get into the same situation and 1 of 2 things will happen. They will either freeze up and nail the car, or try to jerk the bike over without proper body position and tuck the front end.

I'm a firm believer that anyone on bikes should start out on dirt. I started at the age of 7. My kid has a garage full of bikes and at 9 years old can likely outride everyone posting here. He has learned how to regain control of a bike when the front end slides, or the back end breaks loose. He can control those moments and bring the bike back into check.
It's these skill sets that you never learn when you wait until you're 35+ to start riding then start out on a heavy Harley that handles like arse anyway.

I've been around motocross racing for nearly 30 years. I've had my fair share of spills and hospital trips. I've done the street bike thing, I've raced supermoto. You name the situation, I've likely been in it. As long as I've been involved with bike, the hands down best riders I've ever seen started out as kids on the dirt.
The controls are engrained in their brain, they don't have to think about it. They know how to handle the bike, they are far more aware of their surroundings because they are comfortable and confident on a bike.

You are right...I should have qualified...Wait till you are 35 before you ride on the road. I believe that dirt/ and trail riding when younger is an excellent way to build skills. Younger drivers/riders (while having faster reflexes) often don't have the experience to recognize pre-cursors to hazardous situations that they should avoid in highway situations.

You do realize that if you are injured in a car accident those injuries will hurt as bad as injuries suffered on a motorcycle, right?

Yea but....(from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety)
"Motorcycles are less stable and less visible than cars and often have high performance capabilities. When motorcycles crash, their riders lack the protection of an enclosed vehicle, so they're more likely to be injured or killed. The federal government estimates that per mile traveled in 2014, the number of deaths on motorcycles was over 27 times the number in cars."

So you realize most motorcycle injuries are caused by auto drivers and a rider should know this...OK
So you claim to be an ICU something or other and you're bitching about injured riders in pain, likely from an a-hole auto driver...OK

You need to make a career path change, maybe consider being an ANTIFA gang member that enjoys breaking stuff up for fun.

What a winner you are, chuckie.
