The 15% rule is that you do not include tax or alcohol. That is the “rule.”
Anyone deviating from that is over tipping. I used to over tip, not anymore. Over tipping is fine as long as that is what you intend.
Damn, my expenses went down again.

I was at 20 during Covid. I’ve gone back to 15…. sometimes 18 if good service.
You mention Covid, and I recall Ancora Pizzeria on Freret in New Orleans decided to add a 20% gratuity on takeout orders due to the Covid restrictions when people were not allowed to dine in. The Covid hysteria has long since died down, yet the restaurant still includes the 20% gratuity on takeout. Thus, it’s cheaper to dine in and leave a 15% tip than it is to do takeout. Why not just say you do not do takeout orders??

When I went to Europe, servers there actually make a salary and you’re not expected to tip. Food and drink prices were the same too
Ehh they're a little higher and establishments don't keep as large of a staff.
But I do like that system better.

18-20% is an internet phenomenon IMO. No one ever said anything other than "15% for good service" until the great unwashed started getting Internet access in the first decade of the 21st century. Wait staff figured out how to use Reddit, Facebook, etc. and spammed us with the 18-20% horseshite.
Back then people took online advice more seriously, I think. Nowadays most people know that about half the stuff you see on the Internet, particularly on Reddit and Facebook, is just flat-out wrong. We were a bit more gullible 15-20 years ago and the 18-20% thing was a product of that.
ETA and beyond the percentage, 15% was always for (to use a golf metaphor) making par. You don't have to move heaven and earth to get 15%, but if you forget my hot sauce, don't refill my water, make me linger when I want the check, etc. it's going to be more like 12%.

I tip 10% to 25% depending on the restaurant and level of service.
Nice restaurant with quality service I tip high.
I’ll tip no higher than 15% at somewhere like Chilis.

Ok, but do you tip on the pre tax amount, or total bill amount
Pretax always. Taxes steal enough money from us.

Well I'm black......so I tip no more than 13% with a max of $50.
Assuming this isn’t a troll and that you’re actually black, I gotta say I applaud you for posting this to get out ahead of this thing, because this is TD and you knew it was going to come up sooner or later.

Problem is prices are up AND they want a higher rate.
Just with food price inflation, tips would be larger with the same rate.

For decades, it's been 15% for standard attention, and 20% if wait staff gives special attention and by that I mean never ever asks you if everything is okay or chit chat unless you initiate it, while keeping your table clean from dirty dishes, glasses, etc... Back in the day automatically changing the ashtray if two butts were in it.
Interesting that a now deceased friend (died at 90) tipped 10% always and he owned oil wells all over the world. He also flew to NOLA from TX when everything was locked down and stayed for several days because he wanted NOLA food, and played senile when told to wear a mask.

I’m glad I started this. I am reevaluating a lot of things. So what percentage do you all tip on a $200 meal? Does it change?

I usually give 20 or even a little more if the waiter was great or a place I go to somewhat regularly.

It drives me nuts when the suggested tip is calculated off the total post taxes.
I make note of those restaurants and don’t eat there.
Get off my lawn.

Sometimes I leave a penny so they know I didn’t forget

Why not tip on the service rather than a percentage of what the meal costs? They bring a $30 steak to my table vs. a $12 hamburger. Does it take that much more effort for the waiter/waitress to place a $30 steak on my table rather than $12 hamburger? A decent tip is warranted with good service. Just don't base it off of what my food costs.

I told him as far as I knew, as long as I had been alive it was 20%.
Only giving 20% if service is exceptional. Didn't know anyone gave that as standard tip. That's ridiculous.
The girl in front of me at a counter order place yesterday clicked the 22% tip option on the iPad screen on her $20 total bill. I was stunned that this was even presented as an option and even more stunned that this girl selected it. I guess there are enough idiots out there that feel compelled to select something besides "no tip" on these screens that these businesses will keep asking for it.

It’s your money, nobody can make you tip 20%
Posted on 6/3/24 at 6:55 pm to Murtown
I don’t have any particular percentage. I’ve tipped from one dollar to 20%. It depends on the service
