Agreed

If you are that unhappy with service you can still leave $1-$2

No one is asking you to break the bank, every little bit counts.

Plus she probably tipped out the bartender. Never go out to eat with that person again

1. The situation never happened.

2. See 1.

Your friend is lying (if this even actually happened)., It's a way for him to drop the total cost, justify being cheap and not feel as bad about it.

I do think tipping 20% on wine sucks. It's no less work than pouring any other drink.

I just don't understand why people have such a hang-up about tipping at a sit-down restaurant. Just consider it part of the expense of eating. So long as the service was not exceedingly poor or above-and-beyond excellent, just add 20% and move on.

Yeah, the a-hole should tip a little extra for making the waitress make so many checks.

Just reveals ill breeding.

If the OT is unanimous against the customer in a tipping thread you know it must be bad

I have a good friend who is a devout Christian and when we buy one another a meal he will not pay for alcohol. Does not mind being in my presence while I have a beer or a glass of wine but is not comfortable paying for it. I admire him on both accounts. And, I ain't ever bought him a beer! If you wanted to tip the waitress you should have. If he was uncomfortable with that it is his problem, not yours.

Especially considering he could have just calculated the tip without the alcohol. Instead, he made the server do extra work. if we are to assume this actually happened.

If you ever had to work for tips or be held responsible for shite that had absolutely nothing to do with you AND have it effect your take home money you kinda get a sense for what they go thru.

I dont hold shite against a server thats polite and attentive to my needs as a diner cause I've been held accountable for a weak drink or undercooked steak before kinda thing. If I see they're handling 5 tables with like 20-30 diners I dont throw a hissy fit if my water didnt get refilled 3 times. Just empathy really but it's easier to understand if you've been in it.

I take bottles of wine out of the bill before i tip. $300 bottle vs $35 bottle = same amount of effort

I took his point as simply saying he’s someone who actually understands the likely economic machinations of the situation. Not an ‘I want a badge of honor’ deal.

If I sit and food is delivered to me drinks are refilled, etc., I tip. If food is simply handed to me through a window or at a concession stand, I don't tip.

How about this one.........I don't tip on tax. For instance, I went to dinner the other night and the bill for the food and drinks was $118.00. It came to $127.74 after tax. The service was not necessarily great, but acceptable. I tipped 20% on the $118, not the $127.74. I don't mind tipping on the food and drinks, but I'll be damned if I'm going to also give them a tip on the $9.74 that the government extorted from me. I know it's an insignificant amount of money, but it's the principle of the matter.

I'm ususally just a 20% on the total bill guy, but I've noticed a lot of those bills that have the automatic check off deals for various percentage tips will have it on before tax amount.
