Yea we used to drive by it on the way to play Oak Hill high school in baseball back in the day.

Was weird to be in the middle of nowhere and all of a sudden you hear a bunch of chimp noises and exotic birds. Had no idea what it was back then

Yo, yo, New Iberia, Tulane & others are research facilities…Chimp Haven is a “retirement home” for chimps that have been test subjects. It’s one of the only ones like it that I know of. Pretty unique & interesting place to visit when they have “viewing days” for the public.

The Monkey sanctuary in New Iberia is better. The monkeys have a fresh fade and gold necklaces

New Iberia Research Center

As a kid back in the 80’s my dad would drive us by there on occasion. It was at the old air base and in those days it was just rows of cages, I believe 3 or 4 high. We’d drive in and the closer we got, the louder they got. Having watched a few of the planet of the apes movies, this little field trip was unnerving.

Several years ago a chimp got pregnant there. Even though they had been fixed. Guess you really can't stop monkeys from getting pregnant

They also have some mountain bike trails there. Really weird to hear those things start screaming while riding around.

Most people call it the monkey trail. But chimps are not monkeys.

quote:

Chimpanzees are not monkeys! Most primates fall into two categories: great apes and monkeys. There are many differences between the two, but the easiest way to tell if a primate is a monkey or a great ape is by noting whether or not they have a tail. Chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, and gibbons all do not have tails – making them apes! Monkeys not only have tails, but are usually smaller in size compared to apes.
