Took us 4 hrs yesterday.

We stopped twice and the current wasnt so hard i couldnt swim upstream against it at a reasonable clip.

Tiki tubing does shut down at certain river stages. Want to say they were closed two weeks ago.

IMO, canoeing a fast river with logs is much more dangerous. Ive seen a canoe bent in half around a log.

Either way, get drunk around water and watch death rate go up. Its dumb.

Please don't tell me that was phillip white that pitched for southeastern. We were good friends as kids and played ball together. I really hope that wasn't him.

Reasonably certain it was....relative of mine coached him

I've been trying to find out too. My nephew was tight with his younger brother in high school and my mom works with him at HC.

WAFB reporting Phillip White was 26 and from Marrero. Found a page at Southeastern listing Phil White as a junior pitcher in 2009 and his bio lists him from Marrero.

Steele adds the group was from outside Livingston Parish. Dufour says a member of that party told him they were not experienced swimmers.

"She did say they did not know how to swim. Especially the ones I spoke to they did not know how to swim either," said Dufour.

How can you grow up in Louisiana and not know how to swim?

I am also having a hard time visualizing how you could get yourself in a dangerous situation on a river in Louisiana. I'm probably just ignorant to the dangers. Could someone paint a picture of how a bad situation might unfold?

Idk if you're trolling with your username and asking to paint a picture, but basically get tied up in an obstacle, branches, etc and get disoriented with water rushing over your head, particularly if you have been drinking or something else, and it could happen pretty quickly. Strange that two at the same time drowned though. Wonder if one was trying to untangle the other?

Or diving into shallow water, per another poster's comment about being seen climbing trees?

Not trolling. I guess I could see that, but it seems very unlikely.

If both couldn't swim then I can see how one could of drowned while trying to help the other. It seems insane to me that someone would get in a river / ocean / lake without knowing how to swim.

Alcohol + waist deep/chest deep water = danger

Why does it seem unlikely if you've never been? The bottom of the river is lined with downed trees, and it's very easy to get caught in the branches.

I will never understand how someone asks a question about something they admittedly know nothing about, then say the answer they are given seems unlikely. How would you know?

I know I do... It's just frustrating how it happens again and again and nothing ever happens. It'll all be swept under the rug like it is every year.

Hold up...what?

For one, I'm not sure you know what "swept under the rug is." It's already on the news apparently, and I'm sure it's being investigated. Secondly, what would you suggest happen? I've only been to TT once, and it was years ago, but I know we had to sign a waiver accepting risk and all that. And TT had several spots along the river where people were stationed watching (and not just the creepy tree photographer). Outside of that, I'm not sure what else TT could do aside from holding everybody's hand down the river.

And this may sound cold-hearted, but I imagine that numbers-wise, their "death stats" (or whatever) look pretty damn good. Thousands and thousands of people tube there every weekend, and there have only been a few deaths that arose from that. Like someone said, mixing alcohol and rivers is dangerous, so it seems like deaths here and there would be fairly normal, yet they aren't.

One thing I'm wondering about is it says the people were there with a group of about ten or so, right? So did nobody in the group notice that there were two people missing? I know when I went, our whole group stayed together and sort of kept tabs on each other.

Sad situation all around.

What do these idiots think will happen when they go drinking and tubing and have no clue how to swim? Seems like this would be the outcome more often than not.

I have floated a river before, but I haven't floated the river in question.

I can't seem to wrap my mind around someone getting hung up on a log in a river. You're a person, not a knitted quilt.

Not really sure what else to tell you. It can easily turn into a dangerous situation, especially if alcohol is involved.

Yeah, we bring rope for this very reason. Tie all the tubes together into a big raft.. leaving a little slack for people to move their tube around with a few feet.

Sad story and I feel for the families.
You should not go tubing if you do not know how to swim.
