That seems even more outrageous that a 17 y/o can be charged as an adult when it is convenient but a picture of that 17 y/o qualifies as a child for child pornography laws?
The girl was charged for distributing child pornography. The young man was charged with possessing child pornography. 17 is the age of consent in La meaning sexual crimes they will be tried as an adult.
I am not a proponent of the law, but it was enforced as written. Something needs to change in order to protect 15-17 yr olds from themselves.

If anyone has read Tom Wolfe's A Man In Full, this situation is almost identical to a subplot in that novel

It is beyond fricked up that a 16-year old can have sex with another 16-year old but if a camera is involved it is illegal. What uproar caused these sexting laws in the first place?? Are they designed to be some sort of compromise for charging a 17+ year old with child pornography?
If you can legally have sex, sexting charges should be non existent. If you cannot legally have sex, then we can have that discussion.

I understand that, but the girl being charged for sending a picture of herself to another person in private is just as ludicrous as charging the male in this case. WTF are they doing in Baton Rouge these days???

well it's a case of "old school" laws involving child porn being used for a modern behavior that was never foreseen when the laws were written
policing agencies don't care, esp i our current policing environment
the "sexting" law is new and a much more minor offense so that's a step in the right direction, but it only applies (in LA) to kids under 17

well the article basically led to a national reaction and allegations of racism
This happens every week when information is left out intentionally. KSLA didn't invent the wheel here, they were just blasted for it.

i'm guessing the bossier PR people sent this out prior to their PC and WaPo did the article.
That always seems to work in the past... not really.

it's almost assuredly coordinated PR. standard stuff
The WaPo even went after transracial Shaun King, I may have found my new media outlet. I just want the news, good or bad, just give it to me straight and fill me in when things changes or corrections need to be made.

it's shocking that Wapo did this and not the washington times, which is the conservative paper in DC while WaPo is the more liberal option

The Washington Post should write an article about chemtrails and take some quotes from YogaGirl to boost the credibility of their arguments.

You are correct. For distributing the video she was arrested for sexting was the verbiage used.

The parents of the girl are the stupid ones in this situation. Not only did they severely overreact, but they got their daughter charged with a crime.

Arse should be un-banned for starting a thread that is bringing national attention to TD.
#freeArse
Arse is banned? What happened?

yeah it's bad news reports being corrected to show them up so the reporting of the simple facts is not exactly clear
also, the sexting law requires that the offender be prosecuted by the children's code if they transmit the images, so that's why she's not being charged "as an adult"
here is the law
i presume, and hope, that if he was 16, he'd get the same treatment

It might be national attention, but it is for all the wrong reasons. The thread here was mentioned to point out how the outrage over an incomplete story was spreading.

Yes, and i edited my post to KSLA, the S'port Times was actually the one to attempt to bust the story on KSLA.
My big question is where are those quoted in the article berating North La? Surely they will be along to admit that maybe they were a bit over-reactionary due to a deep seeded hate for the area north of I-10 for having pine trees.

Unfortunately it has been determined that this kind of thing is basically unprofitable.

These laws are absolutely ridiculous. The majority of the people on TD would have been in hot water if the phone technology existed when we were 15-17.

I found an old sony phone the other day that I had expanded to a 2gig memory.
Popped the card into the tv slot to listen to some old music, but it was mainly images, and boom... Nudes from 2002.
All of which were taken with digital cameras and either emailed or AIMed.
My wife thought it was much funnier than I did.
