WTF are we doing people. This is fricking absurd:
17-yr old sexting 16-year olds and they're going to catch "sexting" charges and he's now got 3 counts of possession of child pornography. Can we use even the slightest bit of discretion on charges these days?
quote:
Being a minor, the girl was charged under the state’s sexting laws, but since Allen was 17, he was charged as an adult. Furthermore, in “evidence recovered from the young man’s phone, which has literally hundreds of [sexually explicit] photographs and videos, we were able to find another video of a 16-year-old girl,” Whittington said, adding that Allen has been charged with two more counts of possession of child pornography, and the other girl in question has been charged for sexting.

This story shows how screwed up our legislature is. Because there isn't a difference in age greater than two years he could legally have consensual sex with her but can not legally receive videos of her????

It was on the map before. This isn't the first time TD has been referenced in news articles.

2, 17 year olds can have sex, but if they take a picture of one another while in bed after the fact, that's child pornography #truestory

the New York Times did an article on it in 2012

That's the one I was thinking of. That really put TD on the map.

I am in absolute shock that WaPo would call out a slanted news story. Is the Shreveport Times parent company some big competitor or something?
Stories with half truths litter the printed page and news every day, I wonder why they chose to call this one out?

False, 17 is the age of consent. The article above even spells out that La law dictates that no one under the age of 17 can submit indecent or pornographic photos of them self.

well the article basically led to a national reaction and allegations of racism
i'm guessing the bossier PR people sent this out prior to their PC and WaPo did the article. maybe somebody in bossier has a connect at WaPo
it's almost assuredly coordinated PR. standard stuff

Arse should be un-banned for starting a thread that is bringing national attention to TD.

you're right they updated the laws since the last time i looked at them. change my post to say 2, 16 year olds
i think 18 is still the threshold for federal law, though

That seems even more outrageous that a 17 y/o can be charged as an adult when it is convenient but a picture of that 17 y/o qualifies as a child for child pornography laws?
ETA: I see the edit now. Never mind.

well the sexting law only applies to those under 17, so it appears that's what she was charged with. since he's 17, they can't charge him with sexting
i hope that if he was 16, he'd only have gotten a sexting charge
