So my SO has basically hasn't been sleeping for the past year. She gets a handful of hours here and there but never gets any real sleep and is always tired. This is a totally new thing, and it's really killing her energy and overall mood.

I told her she needed to get her thyroids checked, but she's nervous because she says this makes you fat. I know you always hear about fat people having thyroid issues, but is that a result of them being fat or is it more part of the cause?

Is there a correlation she should be worried about? Appreciate any help or any other recs people have! Thanks!

Thyroid issues can have lots of effects, not just weight gain/loss.

It could also be depression or even allergies. I would get all checked out.

Get a sleep study done. Could be sleep apnea.

Does she snore?

The detrimental effects of having elevated thyroid levels greatly outweigh any theoretical risk of weight gain. Avoidance of problems like irregular heart rhythms and even death should hopefully convince her that a simple blood test isn't going to add 50 pounds to her.

I'm dealing with thyroid issues now. Had mine removed in February and I'm going in next week for radiation treatment. After it was removed and biopsied, two forms of cancer were found. Prognosis is good because they seem to have caught it early. DO NOT ignore thyroid issues. An over active thyroid may keep you you skinny but it can also give you a heart attack - this happened to my mom.

This.

Unchecked elevated thyroid levels will leave her with a thin, gaunt, bug eyed corpse one day. So there is that.

People who are hypothyroid (low) are usually the fat ones.

Is there a family history of thyroid issues?

I would also look at caffeine and alcohol intake.

I've heard thyroid problems are one of the most undiagnosed medical issues, especially for women. Her problem may not have anything to do with her thyroid, but I would encourage her to have it checked anyway.

Your thyroid affects your metabolism but it doesn't make you fat. I know many skinny people with thyroid issues. (ETA hypo people not hyper)

She should get a CBC to check and physical. I take a lower dose of thyroid medicine daily and noticed a big difference in my sleep quality when I started it.

She needs to go see an endocrinologist. I see Dr. Gary Field in BR but they are very hard to get into.

For what? Sleeping issues aren't reason to see an endocrinologist.

If it is related to thyroid so it certainly is a reason.

I've been hypothyroid since 1998. Only reason I found out was my Dad died and I went for blood work for cholesterol. I'm 5'11" and 185 pounds. Meds work for me.
