Southern Airways was also the airline that crashed with the Marshall University Football Team aboard killing all.

It was also the only airline to have had a crash ruled by the FAA to be caused by water ingestion into the engines due to heavy rainfall.

Southern Flight 242 from HSV to ATL crashed in a massive thunderstorm because the rainfall rates were so heavy it basically hydro-locked the impellers and choked the engines.

Going from memory here, I believe it was a combination of large hail, water and throttle settings that caused the decel and eventual flameout of both engines. The hail caused heavy damage to the 1st and 2nd stages of the compressor rotors and stators. This damage interupted the airflow to the combustion section which in turn initiated the compressor stalls. The crew tried to minimize the stalling with throttle movements which only added to the problem.

Seattle from Charlotte, 7 passengers on board (it was an 8 passenger jet) was right at $60k expensed to the client.
how long ago was that? That’s like nothing for going cross country . That had to be at least a 6 hour flight , at $10,000 per hour. Don’t know if you can find rates like that anymore For the type of plane it takes to go cross country

ETA: if you can plan out your trip, you can get charter companies to bid against each other. That can help lower your price.

Agree with your sentiment, airline travel sucks today because the quality of the clientele has sunken to unretrievable depths. Those pics were taken in cabin trainers btw.

I have not flown in over 7 years, and am flying to L.A. for the game. First Class on Delta.

Is it just the budget airlines who has problems with trash? I used to fly United for work and the majority of people were experienced flyers, knew the drill, worked together to get in/out of the plane, etc. Southwest was the fun keep the party going airline. Is this no longer the case on the Uniteds and Deltas of the USA?

True, I flew from Kuwait City to Doha about 5 years ago. Some of the most beautiful Asian women I've ever seen worked the flight. I thought, I'd like to the airline's recruiter.

7 years or 47 years, baw? airline travel experience has steadily declined since deregulation, good thing for the OT though, it’s the only reason that they can afford to fly once every other year and be able to come on here an bitch/post their savvy observations about how fricked up airline travel is today

I wish they would bring this back as a luxury thing for people with a love of air travel/nostalgia to splurge on. If they brought back a few 747s with Pan Am regalia and that kind of service to a few select destinations, I think people would book some flights for the experience.

This more or less exists on some Asian & Middle Eastern carriers. Even the major domestic carriers offer premium service on transcons if you’re willing to pay.

I miss the days of “Coffee, tea or me?”, hot stewardesses only (no fatties, geriatrics or male stewards), when the mile high club was something to aspire to.

The stewardesses had to retire at age 31 (or thereabouts) and had to be trim and well groomed.

The pilots were experienced (often ex-military) and commanded respect.

Service was excellent.

Riffraff onboard was rare.
and chance of death was 1000x higher than today

If I I wasn’t posting from an iPad I could show some data that would put that in proper perspective.
