8PM, its not dark yet, but its getting dark. Just going in at that time is risky just because of the limited vision. What is wrong with these people? I know at that age there is still that "it will not happen to me" complex but it just seems so irresponsible.

Yep. Alert from yesterday. ALERTBAY: Single red flags are flying at the beach today. High rip current hazard. Knee deep is too deep.

Who’s the tard downvoting the actual text about flag status on Friday?

This is the post to downvote.

Can someone explain to me like I’m dumb what a rip current truly is? I was a lifeguard every year in high school (long time ago at this point lol) but still consider myself a strong swimmer. I don’t understand how thigh/waist level water can pull me out and make me panic. I’ll hang up and listen.

You are underestimating the strength at which the current can pull you. It’ll knock you off your feet and before you know it you are way over your head in depth and headed out further.

Ding ding ding.

I guarantee not a person in the group had ever heard of rip currents or undertow, and would have looked at you blankly if you warned them about it. I see it all the time. We see the sheriff’s dept have to yell at people from a helicopter and threaten arrest because they won’t leave the water.

Has something changed in the gulf or in the swimmers in the last 25-35 years?

Yes. More non-swimmers have become middle class citizens and can take vacations now, dumb arse.

Seriously, that's what it is? People just not even aware of what rip currents are? My first thought was that its just people thinking nothing would happen to them, but there are signs in some areas right? Also, common sense.. But there seems to be a lot of people who die this way every summer.

I got caught in one in Hawaii. Luckily some sort of instincts or memories from childhood swim lessons kicked in and I did float it out, but I was honestly starting to panic a good bit.

It was a terrible feeling. Sad for these fellows.

Chris, do you have a special chair for sand or do you get rolled out there in one of those wagons with the rugged wheels?

I do not have a special chair that goes in sand, I have rented one of those.. I am not sure what you call it... they have those huge wheels. but I am really not much of a beach person. When we go, we usually go to Orange Beach and stay at the Caribe and I will go to the pier and go fishing while everyone goes to the beach, but there is usually at least one person who will come with me instead..

Its more peaceful. You meet people coming and going, but its not a lot of traffic.. Something about the beach and people all over, kids running around just makes me anxious

It isn't surprising at all. People live in bubbles and sometimes reality pops their bubbles. Most of the time you get to chalk it up as a learning experience, but sometimes you don't get a redo.

Seriously, people can't pick out their county of residence on a map and have no knowledge of how to receive severe weather warnings......in 2024 America. This is similar to that.

I never get in the water at beaches. Zero upside

How is there zero upside to swimming in the ocean? It’s one of the better feelings I know

And why go to the beach and never swim?

I was banned throughout May for an innocuous gif depicting start of NOLA summer fun turned chaos due to free entry. Be safe.

I could easily understand how people don't know what to do in a rip current, and even if they did still panicking if they aren't a strong swimmer.
