I saw that too. A mom and a dad drowned in front of their six kids. I thought about posting it but it was closer to Miami. Panama City Beach is near where a lot of TD users vacation.

What is inherently stupid about it?

Well, there's been no shortage of warnings of rip tides and rough water in the area over the past week.

I've reacted twice already and had no clue as to what the three guys looked like.

Why is race such a big issue to you?

That's fair. Are the warnings specific to time of day, though? Otherwise, I would assume OP thinks it's stupid to go in the water at all.

Same for me. Three very young men dying tragically at their age is terrible.

All people don’t have equal swimming skills or knowledge of rip tides and other hazards.

Based on the end result, calling their actions stupid appears to be accurate.

The alleged stupid part shouldn't have anything to do with time of day.

I'm pretty confident I could handle being caught in a rip in the middle of the day since I'm familiar with swimming pretty far out anyway. But being caught in one at dusk and having to swim back in the near dark is not a situation I want to find myself in.

Same. I’m a strong swimmer and I know how to react to riptides, and I would not go out there in the dark unless I knew the waters were calm.

Why do people that can’t swim go to places like pools, lakes, or beaches?

I can’t rock climb, think I’ll give El Capitan a go.

All three? Not one could make it back? Maybe sharks got them and Mayor Vaugn is blaming rip tides?

It’s pure panic

It’s always easy to analyze from dry land and say “why didn’t they___” but when the moment happens…

Happened to me. I was 17 and very drunk. Fortunately my friends brother was an ex marine and coached me up and eventually reached out and pulled me out. But for a few moments i was shitting it. Definitely sobered up quickly.

For some reason this story reminds me of the famous Fark board thread from back years ago of a guy in a boat throwing a life preserver.
