I'm starting to really hate this line of arguments continually brought up. It is absurd and childish.

It will take a while but it's very true.
Oh now come on, man.
Correlation does not imply causation.
Look at the antics in this country. Are you really claiming that the widespread lack of personal responsibility and maturity is due to a potentially three year difference in drinking age?
I don't care if you give it 50 years, this alone won't change that culture in the US by any appreciable margin.

I didn't think there was a law against 18 year olds drinking with parents in their home.

That graph shows only 15-19 year olds. What about 21+?
The subject we're discussing is lowering the drinking age to 18. Maany in this thread have cited Europe as a "role model" of what we should do here in the US with lower drinking ages. Well, instead of following the herd and just going along with it because it sounded cool, I instead went and did a bit of research. Turns out that Europe has a far bigger problem with binge drinking in their youth than we do. This is not my opinion, it's the facts. And they speak for themselves.

I was referring to before 18- having a glass of wine with the parents at the dinner table.
However AFAIK NYS has an absolute prohibition on anyone drinking/possessing anything before 21, both of our scenarios are moot in some states.

I am not arguing with your conclusion, but with the basis. The reason I asked for the 21+ chart is because by 21 they probably have the binge drinking under control. That means they are more likely to hold jobs, grow a family, and be a responsible adult after 21.
Contrast that with here where our 21 year olds just start drinking. The consequences of binge drinking post 21 are much much higher for society at large.

It's an absolute farce that the government has seen fit to make illegal expected behavior that is a natural part of our culture. "Let's make the majority of our citizens criminals. That seems like a good idea."
Alcohol, marijuana, prostitution. It's been going on for thousands of years and it's not coming to an end any time soon. Legalize it, regulate it, tax it. Better for public safety, public health, and of course public happiness

Can't you already drink with an adult in LA. I was always allowed to when with pareents.

MS does allow an 18 year old to drink anything but liquor in the presence of their legal guardian. I know because I took full advantage back in the day.

im over21 and still think the federal government abused their power and overstepped states rights by "forcing" states to comply with a universal drinking age.

it was 18 when I was in college
i can't imagine college without being able to legally drink

LA was 18 not all that long ago for all alcohol and bars.

Not mad. Just know how dumb I was at 18. I also enlisted as an 18 yr old, fwiw. Definitely didn't make me a responsible drinker.
ETA: Also, as I recall the many nights of binge drinking in the barracks...my underage peers at that time weren't responsible drinkers either.

But the longer-term gains would be cultural. We could begin to foster a more European-style culture of drinking that promotes responsibility and civilized sobriety. People are more likely to act like adults if you treat them as adults. Prohibition has promoted a horrible childishness with terrible results for everyone.
this is the stupidest thing I've ever read. Was it even written by an adult?

Anyone who had or has a drink that's under 21 is a criminal i.e. commits a crime.
Anyone at any age that has smoked weed is a criminal.
You just never got caught.
That's a lot of people.
War on Drugs! Hire more police, make more laws, build more prisons!

It's not worth losing the federal highway money. If they lower the age, raise the penalty for DWI to mandatory jail for any DWI offense and huge fines. Too many lives lost because of drunk driving already.

If you read the thread, you'll see most likely no highway funds would be lost.
Would you be in favor of greater mass transit/uber getting drunk people around rather than more tickets and jail time?
Getting a DWI is almost unheard of in NYC because you walk take transit everywhere. Even at LSU, if they made the north part of campus into a new tigerland, you'd see a drop in DWI/accidents as its accessible by walking.
More tickets and jail time isn't the answer.

If the drunks would use mass transit or cabs/uber that would help, but in La they get behind the damned wheel all the time. Breath analyzers on car ignitions would also help. Of course you could just get someone who isn't drinking to blow in the tube so you can crank it up and go, so that wouldn't be foolproof.
