The Feds won't allow it. They threatened LA with withholding highway funds to force LA to raise the drinking age from 18 to 21.

So? Just raise alcohol tax for the 18-21 year olds that purchase alcohol. That should offset a lot of if not all of the 8% of federal highway funds. This is a states rights issue that Reagan should never have stepped into.

I agree that the drinking age should be lowered but this made me lol.

It would allow bars and restaurants to become “safe spaces” for college-age students to drink and Uber home if they need to.

it seems laughable but it is true to some extent. No reason to drive drunk in cities with uber/functioning cab system.

Binge drinking is curbed in establishments vs. house parties when it comes to college.

Bars cost money, takes time to get another drink, and can cut you off. At the house parties we'd funnel, pass around liquor bottles, play constant drinking games, etc.

And when we were under 21 we definitely partied more at house parties than we did post-21 for legality reasons. MIPs blow and there's always a couple underage friends that don't have IDs.

I don't know. I found this to be true. When I was 18-21 you could find me a lot Uptown in NOLA. Why? The bartenders gave two shits about how old you were, and for 95% of the time, everyone was relaxed and no drama. I could probably count on one hand the number of times I saw a fight, the police, someone getting arrested, or someone assaulting/getting assaulted because they were too drunk.

Contrast that with the house and frat parties I went to in BR at LSU, and the two are night and day. There's something to be said for (kind of/supposed to be) sober bartenders serving you drinks for a fee vs all out uncontrolled house party.

That might be more of a BR vs NOLA thing, but that was my experience.

ETA- Living in NYC where no one drives really has taught me the drinking age should be 18 here. There's no legit reason why its 21 here.

I agree that there is no excuse for drunk driving in BR. But to think that these peoples mindset on it is going to change because of the drinking age is a bit odd. Plus, the entire concept of "safe space" is just laughable.

We have the perfect example of how this will go right here on LSU campus. Tigerland

I was a freshman at LSU when the under 21 drinking loophole was closed in Louisiana. Baton Rouge was always a crappy place to drink. This only made it worse. I don't remember it changing anything in New Orleans though.

It always confused me that 18 year olds can be shipped off to war. They can vote. They can get married, have children, buy a house, own a business. But they can't drink.

Back in the day, I could drink at 18 because of the '87 loophole. It wasn't until I turned 21 that LA finally fell in with the rest of the country (except for Miss, I think) under the threat of losing Fed HWy funds is what I remember.

While I was "DGAF/21" at the time, the change was the nail in the coffin of my beloved "The Bengal"

It just wasn't the same after freshman poaching ended.

Do all college campuses/towns offer Uber?

Well if they didn't. The 18-20yr olds are already drinking in bars and driving home.

Europeans drink in moderation throughout the week ie wine or beer with lunch, couple of drinks after work. Americans wait until the weekend and get absolutely destroyed in immature fashion. Go look at any outdoor cafe in Europe at lunch and you're way more likely to see beer or wine on the table than soda.

The worst bars in Tigerland carter to people who are underage. The only thing that will change is that they will not be breaking the law anymore. It is much easier for bars to work with law enforcement when they aren't worried about half the people in the bar getting tickets.

But Kahn said that in its 2012 ruling on the Medicaid expansion requirement in the Affordable Care Act, the U.S. Supreme Court established that the federal government can't threaten to withhold funding to compel states to act in a certain way.

To her, that means states can change the drinking age without forfeiting federal dollars

Just think of the reduction in tickets, DWI's and mandatory MADD meetings. You think LEO and MADD will ever support something that threatens their existence?

New Hampshire receives $219,574,089 for highway funds.

8% of that is roughly $17.5 million. Do you think an elevated tax covering the alcohol sales of 18-21 years (notorious drinkers of cheap swill) will cover that? Also, keep in mind that New Hampshire has a total population of 1.327 million.

I'd be OK with 19 but 18 isn't good. Most 18 year olds are still in high school so they can buy and give it to younger students.

It's a dumb idea.

They could raise it to 51 for all I care, since most people don't know how to drink responsibly.

Given the choice of expensive drinking vs illegal drinking, I think they'd go the former every time. 17 Mil isn't that much for a statewide tax.

Besides, as was posted above it may be a moot point. The SCOTUS ruling for ACA said that the federal govt can't withold funds based on state legislation.

If not 18 then change it to 19. I believe that is the drinking age in Canada for most Providences except for Alberta, Quebec, and Manitoba.
