What could go wrong?

Pampered American children aren't going to act like adults, because they're pampered American children. Don't care if they can legally drink at 10, this is a dumb idea in our current culture

Didn't LA have to go to 21 because of highway funds threatened? Was it a different percent then or something? If it was untenable then why do states now feel like they will make up the difference?

Because IIRC, the Highway trust fund is on the verge of bankruptcy. Also it's fashionable to take on the feds in some states, and perhaps most importantly, the states have figured out that they can make up the lost funds by new taxes to former underage adults. I doubt the 18-21 year old crowd will mind.

The helicopter parents of this generation really worries me. Is it a sign of our decline that we keep pushing back adulthood for terrible reasons?

It's about time... a drinking age of 21 is archaic.

I doubt many underage drinkers are drinking gin they whipped up in a bathtub. In other words, even though they illegally consume alcohol, whoever bought it for them paid taxes on it.

Is lowering the drinking age suppose to induce more people to drink that weren't already?

I was fortunate to be in college at the tail end of Louisiana's 18 yo drinking laws. I can't fathom what it must be like to have to spend most of college sneaking alcohol and using fake IDs to go to bars. So fricking stupid for voting/draft age adults.

This is why I am actually greatful that most bartenders in New Orleans gave two shits about how old you were even after the law changed. I feel like drinking in a bar vs drinking in an uncontrolled party are two wildly different scenarios. Neither are without risks, but the latter has much more dire consequences.

Growing up, it was legal for a store or bar to sell to me at 18 but illegal for me to purchase till age 21. The great liquor loophole...

So you couldnt legally drink then?

Last I checked, it was legal in Louisiana for 18 year olds to drink on private property. They only changed to age to publically possess alcohol and the age to buy it.

The only people this benefits is MADD and LEO for higher "donations" and more fines and lower BAC for those driving under 21, which means more DWI's.

Most 21 year olds aren't mature enough to drink. Why would anyone think letting stupid high school kids openly drink would be a good idea?

In Louisiana, the 1987 law raising the age from 18 to 21 was deliberately written solely to comply with the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 to avoid losing highway funding, while still allowing 18- to 20-year-olds to drink as before. Not only did it still allow 18- to 20-year-olds to consume in private, it contained a major loophole allowing bars and stores to sell alcohol to 18- to 20-year-olds without penalty (despite purchase being technically illegal) which meant that the de facto age was still 18.[37] In other words, the drinking age was 21 only on paper. This loophole was closed in 1995, but in 1996 the Louisiana Supreme Court declared a drinking age of 21 unconstitutional.[37] That briefly lowered the de jure purchase age to 18, causing an uproar which prompted the Louisiana Supreme Court to reverse its decision, raising the age to 21 three months later.[38] Other exceptions still remain to this day, including drinking in a private residence,[39] and Louisiana still has some of the most liberal general alcohol laws of any state.

So maybe we should raise the age to thirty? Surely by then they will be mature enough.

It is expected that probably the majority of people are drinking between the age of 18-21 and a large chunk of highschool kids are drinking too. It's an absolute farce that the government has seen fit to make illegal expected behavior that is a natural part of our culture. "Let's make the majority of our citizens criminals. That seems like a good idea." fricking assholes.

Most decent ones have a nice bar/restaurant district within walking distance of where a good number of students reside. Such should be encouraged for any number of reasons.

Most should have some form of public transportation. If they don't then they should.

The Feds won't allow it. They threatened LA with withholding highway funds to force LA to raise the drinking age from 18 to 21.

ETA: The law changed when I was 19. It was a sad night at the Chimes.

But 16 year olds are mature enough to drop out of school or get married? 18 year olds are informed enough to vote and mature enough to go to war?

Where does your hypothetical end? High school and live at home until you're 25?

Maybe they are pampered because people like you think that raising the alcohol limit is protecting them or that they need protection in the first place.

In reality, 18 year olds are going to drink. Might as well let them do it legally.
