Thoughts on university fees for extra curriculars (Athletics and other wise)

ULM is putting a fee up to student vote today that’ll charge students $10 per credit hour (not to exceed $150 total) that’ll be dispersed amongst various student organizations including athletics (I wanna say athletics gets the largest chunk of it but I’m not sure).Students at the school of course are throwing a huge fit over it. What are your thoughts?
Personally I’m for it. Granted I was an athlete there so my opinion is biased but at this point anything that can help the university grow some and make it more attractive is only a good thing. The fee is essentially an investment to make the degree more valuable, in my opinion. Not too mention it’s a ton more forthright in its intentions then a lot of the other bullshite vague fees universities charge like an academic excellence fee or whatever other shite they come up with.
Just curious what the OTs opinion was on this.

State universities add fees because they cannot increase tutition without state approval. Fees are generally easier to get approved.
Fees can be a good thing as they lock in a financial commitment to the associated programs at the school.
LSU has used fees to keep their classroom tech up to date as well as upgrade their REC center
I believe they also have an athletics fee which allows students to attend games (non-football) free of charge
Here's a list of the LSU fees:

UAB did something similar for athletics when it was bringing back the football program after the 2014 shutdown. It was a $25 per semester fee and would go toward the fundraising to bring back the football, bowling, and rifle teams.
I voted no. Tuition went up unexplained every single semester I was there. Therefore, I didn’t feel it fair to impose an additional fee (even if it is a small one), even if I did support the return of these programs.

Louisiana universities raise fees when their state-supplied budgets don't stagnate or decrease. Despite what some would have you believe, none have ever had a funding problem. I spoke to a provost about this exact issue. He told me just that.
So, your fees will match or exceed tuition most of the time.
Eta: In fact, every university in the state has been taking in more money each year than the previous year. They also spend more each year than the previous year. Financials are public

The big culprit of all of the increases in school spending is the administration positions.
The number of administrators for bullshite depts such as diversity or title IX based entities are increasing.

I remember that I had an "excellence" fee when I was at LSU. I'm yet to receive what I paid for.

We had a "Fuel Recovery Fee" at UNO, that was in place just in case the school happened to use more electricity than it planned to that semester. Didn't get it back if they used less than budgeted for.
We also had a "Building Use Fee", and a "Student Retention Fee"

yea no way in hell this passes. I just find it amazing that students are throwing a fit when all they have to do is vote no and theres a shite ton of other stupid fees assessed that are never explained. Why not throw a fit over those?

As much as the students bitch about college costs, they almost ALWAYS overwhelmingly approve the new fees.
The campus vote will be like, "Proposal A, for the additional of a new diversity training center - this will cost each student $10 per semester." And time after time, they continue to vote yes.
My daughter pays almost $350 a semester in added fees, most of which were voted by the students themselves.

These votes are usually just for show.

You win. This is 100% the case.

LSU has a $150 golf fee???
My second son is at ULL -- his fees I read include day care, fee, cheerleader fee, as well as a bunch of other things. These I should add are MORE than what the fee is for campus police.

Again, another "when I was at LSU" I had TOPS, so tuition was covered. The entirety of the $700-$800 that I paid a semester went to assorted fees.

They should just start cutting all of the non profit generating sports.

The zero balance budgeting is something that needs to change. Schools waste a lot of money at the end of every fiscal year because they have to start burning up money they haven't spent on whatever they can think of to get to zero. I taught at a State University and the department head would come into my office and tell me to find someplace to spend X dollars by the end of the week or risk having to department budget cut.
