Yea some wear the shirt as a sign of rebellion. It's more of what it symbolizes than the actual man himself.
Then you have people such as Nelson Mandela come out and say "Che Guevara is an inspiration for every human being who loves freedom.”
Mandela is praised for his work in South Africa, but one can make a very compelling arguement that hea and Che Guevara are one in the same

Whoever marketed these shirts is a fricking hypocrite. Oh the irony of marxist, lesbian, gay college communists using money to purchase a dirtbag shirt.

It;s ideological folly. Even he admitted at the time that his ideas lacked planning and haven't been thought through to some end.
They were pipe dreams which generally attract people who don't have to deal with the reality of economic forces. He disliked what occurred in the Soviet Bloc, but their idealism to start was very similar to his.
Of course he believed his socialism was better, I'm sure they all do.
It's impossible to have freedom of expression and central planning. They are incompatible.

"Regardless of how bad communism is"
I can make a comparison between it and anything else...including "mischief"

Fontova's book is entertaining but I'm not sure it can be cited in any historical paper.

I had a LSU shirt that had Mike dressed up like Che.
I thought it was funny.

They have no clue who this is, and if the do that's sad.

It's funny to hear all of the 12 year olds in this thread talk about Marxism as if it was a succinct evil entity. Marxism is no more evil than capitalism.
Which philosophy do you think has been more harmful to the native, first nationers, of the new world? I would think capitalism and its unbridled greed wins that award hands down...on the merits of its wholesale destruction and genocide of many complete societies.
Did you know that the original natives of the first islands that Columbus landed on were all enslaved, shipped to other islands and then eventually wiped-out to extinction? European capitalism was real good for them.
Guevara's problem is that he was on the losing side and thus gets re-written poorly.
People wear/wore shirts with his picture as a sign of rebellion and protest against the greed that is inherent in our capitalist system.
ETA...I've never seen anyone wear a t-shirt with Rumsfeld's picture on it.

99% of them are hipsters who have NO idea who he was, what he did, or what he stood for...they just think it's cool to be anti-establishment...

Tell them about this
I could also have them talk to one of the two guys that I work with who came to the US in 1980 during the Mariel boat lift and left friends and family back in Cuba.
They both lived through Castro's revolution and I'm sure they would enjoy explaining to some twenty-something dipshit hipster in a Che Guevara t-shirt what life under communism is really like.
quote:
Several prisoners who survived the La Cabaña death camp recall one dark evening when a 14 year old boy was thrown into their holding cell. The boy had unsuccessfully tried to defend his father from Guevara’s assassins. Guards came and dragged the boy out of the holding cell. Che ordered the boy to kneel boy, put his pistol to the back of the boys neck, and fired.

you're confusing capitalism with imperialism..you're the 12 year old apparently
why don't we play a game...you list all the scientific discoveries communism is responsible for that helped humanity and I'll list those capitalism is responsible for....
this should end quickly since I'm pretty sure you can't list a single medicine, technology, water purification system, fertilizer, refrigeration system, or anything that your marxist friends have brought to the world while the list of capitalist contributions to the world is virtually endless.
Capitalists have delivered hundreds of millions from poverty to comfortable life while communism has done the opposite.
Greed: marxists want to take by from what others have created and give to to whom they choose while capitalists believe that the person who creates something gets to keep it. Who is greedy again? I want to keep what I created and you want to take it from me and I'm the greedy one. Not quite junior.

Whatever Che did or didn't do, One thing I know is that people from the US don't cram aboard unsafe rafts by the thousands to escape to Cuba. So there must be something there so bad that Cubans were willing to do this. Pretty much all you need to know.

No doubt it sucked, but not much different than life under the dictators the US supported, like Pinochet, Trujillo, Battista and even Saddam Hussein(when we liked him bc he jacked w the Iranians). 'Merica!

Most people who wear Che shirts have no idea what it means. They're certainly not making an anti capitalism statement while surfing Reddit on their MacBook in a Starbucks.

How do you fit 50 Cubans in a shoe box?
Tell 'em it floats.
