Can you live in Seattle and fly into Anchorage? I went to Anchorage two years ago and it was a pretty nice town, but I don't think I could deal with the perpetual cold. The flights from Seattle to Anchorage are fairly cheap.

Your car will probably be broken into by someone on bath salts.

Do it! I lived in Alaska for a few years and loved it. I would love to spend every summer there.
Bonus is the permanent dividend fund where every resident of Alaska gets a yearly check (thousands of dollars each). A lot of people use this money to "go outside" (meaning outside of Alaska). I was very puzzled the first time someone told me that hadn't been outside in 10 years.
The suckiest time in alaska is the melt about march april when a lot of the snow melts into the dirt creating a mess which looks like a chocolate snowball and is a pain to drive it and is dreary looking.
Lots of gorgeous scenery and places to vist and amazing things to see.
Oh just do it already.

Yeah I am here this week and know what you mean. We will be in eagle river or south Anchorage.

FYI, I know someone that moved there 20 years ago for work. He is leaving when he retires. He said the weather is an issue when you were born in warm weather climate.

Just avoid midtown, spenarrd and downtown around the bus terminal
Do it, OP. Live in the hillside, Eagle River or commute from the valley.

At that salary, with 75% of your time being from home, frick yeah I'd do it in a heartbeat. I hope you enjoy the outdoors, it's beautiful there. The adjustment to the cold is about the main thing you'd have to worry about. The people and culture overall from my experiences are very similar to the south: very nice and welcoming. I personally don't know if I could live there "for good," but I could definitely do a decent stint there.

I would take it. Wife can visit warm climates a lot for 250K a year.

First, will you rely on your wife's income at all? I know someone who moved out to Anchorage to teach and within a year she was let go because they cut positions. They said they might end up hiring her back once they had final enrollment numbers and got to look at their budget again but there was no guarantee. Also, what about your wife's retirement? You don't make a ton of money as a teacher but the retirement is sweet. Has she put in a lot of years? She will be starting over going to a new state. If she has enough years she can let it sit and get at least something from Louisiana but if she only has a few years then all that money may be gone. Just something to think about. I would move to Alaska for sure but only for something more temporary. Not sure how long I would want to stay. It is my favorite place I have ever been to but the city life there is not much to get excited about.

MIL did same thing, big job with Siemens up there. Fairbanks, not Anchorage. Big pay. She lasted a year. Too depressing she said. And her husband could never find a job for himself.

I'd trade places with you in a heartbeat. Always dreamed of pulling up stakes and moving to Alaska. Just not sure how I'd make a living. I wouldn't hesitate.

Would take it for the experience and secnery if nothing else

What's your salary now? I mean if its $100k, I'd absolutely live in Alaska for a $200k bump. If its $215k maybe not.
They are going to pay you OT working from home? lol.
Just remember, it doesn't have to be a long term decision. Why not take it as an adventure and see how it goes?
What's the worst case and you hate it in 2 years? Job wise?

I wouldn't have to think twice. frickin move man

Depends on the prospects of landing another $250-300k/year job somewhere else. If it were me, I'd do it in an instant. Enjoy the great outdoors for 6 months a year, and invest in some at-home entertainment or save PTO days for trips to warmer locales when its -20 degrees the other half of the year

Plus, there's not much cultcha in AK.
Anchorage is full of reedy white methhead dipshits and is routinely on lists of cities with the highest crime rates but I'm sure the lack of black people will convince the entire OT that it's an utter paradise
