think I'd need about a 50% raise. Highly doubtful I'd do it for less. Might be beautiful but it's awfully isolated.
You could live in Anchorage and never feel like you've left the lower 48.

Skiing is only half an hour away from downtown. Not sure how that works in the winter with there being no sunlight.

I make plenty of decisions based on how much will I regret this? I typically believe I will regret many more of the chances that I don't take than the ones I do that don't work out.
I've been here for 7 years now. That's a long time for me to be in one place. I've been getting the wanderlust a bit lately.

Darkness doesn't really change distance.

It gets light in winter. Probably the shortest day is 5 hours, but you gain light rapidly after solstice.
Anchorage has a couple small ski areas within a few miles of downtown, and then Alyeska which is about 45 minutes away. Anchorage will push for the 2026 winter Olympic games.
Alyeska is beautiful, Girdwood is a cool town

Financially, it makes sense (although offset by the cost of living in AK).
For the sake of your children, it makes more sense. Any person with half a brain can recognize the social trends and the inherent risks of die-versity, particularly in high populated areas. Move your family as far north as possible.

I set that one up nicely for you.

It's definitely a beautiful place. It is very expensive though. A trip to the grocery store for milk, etc. is a real shocker. If the wife is not on board, it could be a problem. It can be very isolating during the winter when it's dark at 4 pm and too cold to get out. If she is working, it will definitely be better. I know a lot of couples where the wife said "I'm out of here, you can come with me or freeze your arse by yourself." That's why there are lots of single males there and lots of crazy people.

I don't unfortunately. I worked on the Air Force base there but have sense moved to Germany. Miss it everyday.

I heard this saying speaking of women moving up there because of the men to women ratio "your odds are good but there is a good chance he is going to be odd". Always thought it was very accurate.
I think the majority of people raised in the lower 48 cant take the drastic change for more than a couple of years before they have had enough but if you are an avid outdoors men type, I believe it helps, if you are not I think it will get old fast!
I love the outdoors but bears scare the heck out of me, own a big gun and bring it with you everywhere.

. I'd tell my wife she better start thinking of other ways to cover the lost income because she surely isn't bringing home the bread (literally and figuratively).
The food is the only thing saving Louisiana from being the shittiest state in the nation. That's it. Chew on that for a minute.
I'm not sure what your are making right now, but you simply don't pass up $250,000 + to live in Louisifrickingana...

Anchorage isn't as bad as Juneau when it comes to bears but you'll still see urban bear and moose.
