I read the whole thread “Let’s talk about Drugs”. I was really surprised at how many people are taking drugs for depression and anxiety. I know I find exercise helps with issues like mild anxiety.
I am curious how many people taking antidepressants and anxiolytics actually exercise. Has anyone cured their symptoms from exercise or has it been totally ineffective?
There are extremes in anxiety and depression that must be treated with meds. Could those extreme cases be prevented if exercise or other activities were started earlier and not allowed to fester into a clinical condition?

Exercise seems like the easy way out, it's for cowards who are too lazy to talk to their doctors and make a real change in their lives.

I've been working out 5 to 6 days a week for the past 4 years, including yoga and meditation exercises.

Honestly, it hasn't helped my anxiety that much.

I was pretty depressed due to losing my dad this year. I packed up and moved across the country to be closer to some friends, started traveling, exercising, and just genuinely enjoying life. I know I am fortunate as not everyone can do what I did but the point is I don't think drugs would have brought me out of my slump like life changes have.

No. People should stop exercising altogether. Fat, unhealthy, and pumped full of ‘I hate myself’ medications are “Big, Bold, and Beautiful” and you’re just an a-hole if you suggest otherwise.

Even if you have a minor injury in your lower body you shouldn’t skip leg day

Exercise helps but it isn’t a magic pill. The real way to get over those issues is to re-train your brain. But that takes a lot of work and people would rather just take a pill.

There are studies provide evidence for exercise as a treatment for anxiety and depression. Mostly either as a adjuvant to medical treatment for more serious cases or as a treatment alone for mild cases.

There is not clear consensus on it though as "exercise" is such a vague term and the causes of different peoples anxiety is wide ranging that its hard to just say "exercise" helps.

Although in a research project I did a while back, i ultimately found that exercise CAN help reduce depression/anxiety but the only solid evidence I found was exercise that got you to 60-80% your VO2 max. So essentially, doing high intensity cardio/running is your best bet.

Having more emotionally stable people running around seems like a net positive to me.

I was a complete gym rat when my first panic attack happened. And when it is at its worst exercise is near impossible. Can activity and exercise keep it away? I believe it can , but not totally.

Working out pretty much fixed depression for me.

Anxiety for me was something that took thought and effort to get over. Mental discipline.

Sounds like you're too lazy or cheap to buy medication like an adult. If everybody took your approach and quit paying for things, we'd be in another depression. Way to tank the economy, a-hole.

Let’s not go crazy here. I didn’t quit drinking and driving. I’m still semi responsible and taking charge of my own life.

Exercise and my diet has really helped my anxiety. I was on some medicine for about three months then got off the shite when I started hitting the gym routinely and changed my diet. I’d suggest it for anyone that is struggling with anxiety.
