So my mom is looking for a car and I’m helping her out. I scan cars.com for some prices. I find really good prices in Houston, Atlanta and Tampa.

Well we find the car she wants at the Houston dealership so I fill out the information for them to contact me. This was yesterday, they email me, I call them back and agree to their internet price. I tell the girl that I just need the out the door price for tt&l so I can bring a cashiers check.

She tells me that she’ll get with the finance department and get back with me. That was yesterday at 10:30. Several calls since with not being able to contact her. I had the sales managers name and number so I called him too with no response.

Kind of confusing. Anyone else had these types of issues with these internet car sales?

Sometimes you simply can't get around bad employees, and car dealerships are full of them. There are presumably dozens of dealerships that sell the brand you're shopping for in that radius-- just move on and try some others. This is wise anyway to compare out the door prices at multiple places.

they want you to sit in the finance office so they can use high pressure sales tactics to sell you garbage like wheel and tire protection, extended warranty, and gap insurance. Don't buy any of it.

There will be some dealership fees - a few hundred dollars is normal...but read the itemized breakdown carefully.

I had a decent experience with it. I was not a fan of the places that say the car is in your city, but actually has to be shipped there. It was asinine, and if I didn't like the car I'd have to pay for the "shipping".

I will never, ever, ever, ever buy a car without bringing it to a mechanic first.

In my limited experience with this, used car buyers who aren't financing and have settled on something in the inventory based on online pricing are at the absolute bottom of the priority totem pole

Cargurus for searches

Their filters are 2nd to none. Then contact said dealer

Just luck of the draw on dealership and employee you get

I found my last car on cars.com all the way in Iowa. Smooth process and they sold it to me for the online price. They even arranged the transport of the vehicle for me at a cheaper price than I was being quoted for by other transport companies

I got lucky because the car I wanted as far as package, interior and exterior color was pretty rare so if they would've been awful to work with I would have been in a pickle. But if the vehicle you want is not hard to find, I would suggest looking at another dealership if the current one is giving you the cold shoulder. You know what will end up happening. You will buy the car from someone else, the first dealership will get back to you too late by hammering you with unwanted emails until you tell them to eff off that you already bought the car

I actually had a positive experience finding a car using the apps. Used Truecar, Cars.com and Car Guru all at the same time. Used 19 Passat for my mom. What they all were helpful with was the median prices within your target so you could narrow down things. Once you have a nice target, I used other targets as leverage. The dealers knew where I lived and quickly knew I had a 200 mile radius no problem. Shreveport competed with Dallas, etc. Nice thing is the sites usually have days on lot or is easy to find out. I got a great deal back in July. Just my experience. Just play with it and be patient.

This. The few times I bought a car with cash took longer then to few times I financed.

They make their money by profit on the vehicle you’re buying, low balling you on your trade and getting a cut of the financing. You took 2 of 3 away from them so you’re not a priority to them.

I prefer AutoTrader, but Cars.com is solid. If you're looking used, I'd take a look at Craigslist and FB Marketplace as well. You can get some good private market deals on either if you don't want to deal with the stealership BS.

Sounds like they don't want to sell the car to you since you're paying cash.

30 years ago pics would have been pretty good I guess. She has been ravaged by RA and needed something pretty simple to drive. Push button this and that. She's 78. Fiery redhead in her day, though.

^This or some salesman has a hot prospect for the car who, if they buy, will want the 72 month financing, car warranty, credit life insurance, etc.

It's a seller's market for cars right now.

I use sites like that as a resource for information, that’s about it. That being said, they are pretty valuable for that purpose.
