Thoughts on “Aunt Dianne” mystery

There’s a few documentaries on this all referred to as There’s Something Wrong With Aunt Dianne. Basically this seemingly normal mom/wife drives the wrong way on an interstate in NY and kills her kid, 3 nieces, and 3 in the other vehicle. One kid survives. Toxicology shows .19 BAC and lots of THC. However video evidence shows she wasn’t acting under the influence just before the crash.
So for those who are familiar, what do you think happened? Medical episode, suicide, or was she really messed up? I think the husband lied about their day and they actually smoked pot together that morning before leaving the camp and she had the bottle of vodka in the car. She me have taken additional meds which interacted with the booze and caused her to become black out drunk behind the wheel.

I'll go with "she was fricked up"

She was an alcoholic that drove drunk in the wrong direction on an expressway and killed a lot of people.
It's not a mystery. Her family is in denial, and it's sad to watch.

I think it was “ripped from the headlines” to be the basis for a law & order episode too

Sounds like a clear case of “no one wants to believe Aunt Diane could have done that “ syndrome. Simplest explanation is usually correct—-she was fricked up.

This doesn't sound like much of a "mystery"

Sounds like she was so fricked up she didn't realize she was driving the wrong way down the freeway. No reason to be acting any different in her fricked up state. She was acting normal because she thought everything was fine.

But witnesses at the gas station and McDonalds just before said she didn’t seem like she had anything wrong with her at all. I agree I think she was a terrible person and the family is trying to clear her name because they don’t want to believe it. But how do you get that fricked up within 30 minutes while watching 5 kids at a playground to do what she did.

I've known a couple hardcore alcoholics who had to have a drink to get out of bed. They drank all day everyday and would be hammered all the time but unless you really knew them, you'd have no idea. Their tolerance goes up and being fricked up becomes their new normal.
The family is definitely in some serious denial.

I did enjoy the doc, but took much of it with a big grain of salt.
It's just gas station video of her walking in and out. Not everyone who is fricked up stumbles around like Foster Brooks. Some of us are professionals.
They make it out like it is impossible she was drunk or stoned. But then it's admitted, yeah, she smoked weed now and then, but just to help sleep. And there was a bottle of vodka in there, but we just drank a little around the campfire.
Per the Wikipedia page on the crash, "Daniel eventually admitted that he and his wife had been drinking during the camping trip, but denied that Diane had anything to drink on the day preceding the crash." And "it was reported that Schuler's sister-in-law had made a statement to police that she actually smoked marijuana on a regular basis."
The husband got busted for DWI several years before the crash. It's not like they were Mormons.

It's been a while since I've seen it, but I thought she went in the gas station looking for headache meds. I think the surviving kid said something like "mommy's head hurt and she couldn't see." I remember thinking that she could have had a bad headache or migraine and ended up drinking/smoking to get some relief. Anyone that's driven with that many kids in the car can see how a migraine could happen. So drunk, high (possibly) and migraine bad enough that you can't see straight just seems like a recipe for disaster.
