This also came in handy when the rich families in the North could skirt conscription of their sons by paying immigrants to fight Johnny Reb.

Possibly an argument could be made for an inversion of it though: the model of slavery didn’t work for the Northern economy hence abolition of it was not locally painful for Northerners. Then abolition became only a moral issue for Northerners.

By the mid 19th century it was becoming clear that Slavery was indefensible from an evolved human perspective.

The biggest export for the northern states before the Civil War was textiles. The largest industry in the northern states before the Civil War was textiles. And those northern textile mills relied on Southern cotton.

The north relied on slavery just as much, if not more, as the South.

Europe emancipated their slaves a decade or so before the war and no war was fought.

Lincoln backed the Corwin amendment which would have allowed slavery into perpetuity in the existing slave states.

Only because the Union army was getting its arse handed to them and Lincoln knew it was only a matter of time before Britain and possibly France were going to side with the Confederates.

And let's not pretend the North overwhelmingly freed their slaves, most were sold to the plantations in the South hence "being sold down the river"

The North didn't open their arms and take in freed slaves either.

Also, research "Contraband Camps" and how these freed blacks were treated.

Reconstruction era would have been much better under Lincoln for the South. Once Andrew Johnson was out the Radical republicans in congress took over reconstruction and really punished the south worse than they should have

Lot's of people end up giving the credit to Lincoln for freeing the slaves. Truth of the matter is, he didn't free a single one. His "Emancipation Proclamation" kept slavery in place on the border states, but "Freed" slaves in the South. Problem is, Lincoln had no control over the Southern States at the time. The whole "Emancipation Proclamation" was a farce.

Even the 13th Amendment was ratified by the states. You can argue that Lincoln helped craft it, but it wasn't even legislation he signed into law.

Lincoln ran roughshod over the Constitution. He imprisoned his political opponents, journalists, and dissenters.

Slavery was dying it's natural death in the Western World. Given another decade or so, it would have died it's natural death in the US as well. Instead we got a civil war. These United States of America turned into The United States of America and into the giant federal monstrosity it is today. Lincoln should shoulder some of the blame for the problems our country faces today, not all, but some.

He should, but not with the massive amount of mythmaking that has ascended him to God-like status with the people who refuse to learn history.

Lincoln's legacy (whatever good or villainy) will never be forgotten. Apparently not even in the future.

I will say I was rooting for him, Kirk, Spock and the other Vulcan dude to beat down the bad guys in The Savage Curtain, from Star Trek TOS, S03, E22 (1969).

Lincoln was a tyrant. The United States of the founders died when he started the war by sending troops to Fort Sumpter. He killed the Republic of our founders and replaced it with an overpowered federal government.

Agree. It was unimaginable punishment inflicted on the South, unacknowledged till this day.

From what I gather from non-mainstream historians, Johnson and Lincoln owed people favors, thus weren't really calling the shots. (Of course people will vehemently dispute this as being "impossible.")

Based on Victors' inversion of actual History, "Reconstruction" of the South euphemistically obviously meant, " De-Construction and Annihilation".

It was said by some that the entire CW and its sordid, murderous aftermath was fully orchestrated by Int'l Bankers.(also heavily disputed version of "History.") As usual, the Victors in this case also whitewashed the bad and ugly and created a benevolent narrative for posterity's sake along with a mythical Lincoln. Southerners weren't fooled; they lived it.

So should Lincoln or some others be blamed for psychopath Sherman going scorched on the South 's major population centers and infrastructure, leaving a broken society in ruins and trauma? Why would "Christians" of a "Christian nation have acted so unmercifully and barbarian?
