re: Those who had expensive weddings

I got remarried a few years ago. We decided to keep it small, and to emphasize the entertainment, drinks, and food. About 120 people, and the total cost was about 20. We had some outstanding food and a terrific bar.

I actually went to a wedding last night, probably the nicest I've been to. But, the bride and groom were both mid 30's, so a much smaller crowd - maybe 200-ish. I imagine the spent upwards of $80k, flowers alone were probably $15k...absolutely insane; but her parents are loaded...
Was it in Lafayette?

If I knew ahead of time that there wouldn’t be alcohol I just wouldn’t go.

You also said that was over 20 years ago.
Wait....reception in a church hall? So no alcohol. And finger foods? So no alcohol and no proper food??
Yikes. Guarantee anyone that said they “had a nice time” was just being nice.
You're very judgemental for someone who comes from poor, trailer trash and had a beach wedding in Destin, which is the epitome of trashy(only second to a Biloxi beach wedding).

You seem quite obsessed with me. Do I need to start paying rent for all the space I'm taking in your head?
And at least I properly fed my guests and made sure they had plenty of alcohol.
ETA: I've been to weddings like he described, and they are just not fun. You go to show support for the couple but you know it just won't be a fun event. If I said it was a nice wedding...it was just to be nice to the people having it cause I still liked the couple in spite of their wedding choice.

Sounds like your brother is marrying a high maintenance woman. That's all from her, she wants the $50k wedding. Hopefully he doesnt have reminisce back to this time as a focal point for when he knew she wasnt the one.

That is insane. If rich sure have at it. If not...tell them they are idiots. Both my sisters weddings and my Moms after she remarried five years after my Dad died all cost less than that...each wedding was nice and fun. One on the beach, one on a massive farm that was beautiful, and one at my former bosses lake house. All together they cost around 22k for all three. That bride is greedy af if asking for a 50k wedding.
I paid for a majority of both of my sister's weddings and if they asked for that I would have lost it. They knew I am decently well off but not rich. So they were just happy to have someone help them out and it's my job as the man of the family

My dad and my paw in law offered me and my wife 20 grand not to have a wedding.. wife wouldn’t do it. My dad spent 10, her dad 10, and we spent 5 to 10.. I was all for taking the money and eloping but wasn’t my call.

30-50K is pretty standard to have a decent wedding. A band and booze alone rack up the price. 100+ people weddings aren't cheap.

Former coworker of mine her parents spoil her rotten. They paid for her wedding a few years ago. I would guess they spent 40-50K on her wedding. She got married in an actual castle out here in AZ.
She got married in November of that year. Her husband had moved out of the house by January. She found out she was pregnant right after he moved out.
Exactly. Dad could have had the same outcome if he had just set the money on fire.

I've never lived in a trailer in my entire life. For someone obsessed...you should maybe do more research.

What I learned from the OT today.
Any event, whatever it is, including weddings, can only be tolerable with alcohol. I did not know that.
My catholic friends must have been miserable at my wedding. I will ask them at lunch on Monday and apologize if necessary.

My wife and I only had a wedding to appease my family. I paid cash for it and all in we were around 3k maybe but only had my parents, sister/brother/2 nephews and her parents with her sister/3 nieces. No rehearsal dinner, no reception other than taking everyone to lunch after.
Absolutely no regrets. We took on no debt from it. Didn’t have to allow family to be any more involved than absolutely needed. Lower stress involved.

Nope. My parents moved into a trailer after they lost their home to a fire...but I was 29 when that happened.
I mean...he's calling me out for being judgemental...but he's being judgemental as well saying those that live in trailers are automatic trash.
What a loser. Whatever dude.
I'm not judgemental against poor people or weddings on a budget. But damn...at least feed your guests properly and give them an option of some sort of alcohol. Finger foods is not a meal.

I'm thinking of buying a few acres and building my final resting place, I'm thinking I'll buy a double wide to live in while I'm building it, no big deal, a guy I work with is knocking down over $500k/yr. and he lives in an RV
