Those who had expensive weddings

My brother, who has been dating same girl since high school, asked his longtime girlfriend to marry him.
All in they are looking at $50,000!
They are asking my parents for $15k. Her parents are chipping in $15k, and they are cashflowing the remaining $20k.
My question is, if you had an expensive wedding, say $35k+, are you happy you spent that money on your wedding or do you now regret it?

Seems like their best option would be to do a wedding for 30K then.

People have expensive weddings to impress other people.

This is one of those quarterly OT Threads.

my parents would have laughed in our faces if I asked for 15K for the guys part in a wedding. in the next breath, they would tell me that I needed to dump that fiancee 5 minutes ago
It is the responsibility of the bride's family to take care of the wedding. The groom takes care of the rehearsal dinner and the honeymoon

This is the best answer! Don't fall for the competition of overspending. They should save their own money for a nest egg

Huge waste of money. I’d do it for $5k and keep the rest

We had a really nice wedding for 12K
People get stupid and just whizz cash away.

They will be better off if they go to a JP and put the money down on a house.
Which one of them wants the Princess wedding? Whichever one it is will keep them poor, squandering their cash until the inevitable divorce.

How old are they?

Tell you brother to take most of that cash and put as a down payment on a home and use a little bit of it to have a big party after they have a small wedding ceremony with family and close friends.
Have a best man and a maid of honor and skip all the formalities.

You could buy a sweet double wide for 50K

Princess wedding is her idea. Brother 26. She is 25. There is no doubt it they would be better off finamcially saving the money or using it for a down payment. I try to explain that and the rebutle is yeah, but we'll only get married once and i can make always make more money.

Unless there is liquidity in the mix, expensive weddings are a waste of money and, since 2008, imo, boorish.
Not to mention the statistic probability of paying for a second one.
