My question is, if you had an expensive wedding, say $35k+, are you happy you spent that money on your wedding or do you now regret it?
Mother in law paid - personally she wasted money, but it was nice

Of course it is. If their wedding is cringeworthy...maybe I'll see details of their wedding on the fb wedding shame group I'm a member of
She'll finally get the wedding she wants....fast forward a couple of years will feel like she missed out cause she never dated anyone else while in her 20s and she'll leave but get to keep the house and the dog. While your brother is still paying off the princess wedding.

You’re going to get the predictable answers here about why people shouldn’t spend money on nice things. Truth is that $50k isnt a crazy amount for a wedding. It’s not cheap by any means but it’s not crazy.
It depends on how much access they have to money and what kind of families they come from and what kind of jobs they have. If they both work at Big Lots then it’s probably not a good idea. If they’re both investment bankers at Goldman Sachs then they’ll be fine.

Is this gonna be your sister-in-law in a couple years?

They are asking my parents for $15k. Her parents are chipping in $15k, and they are cashflowing the remaining $20k.
Seems like their best option would be to do a wedding for 30K then.
Even if they had it, I wouldn’t have the balls to ask my parents to shell out 15k for a wedding. The majority of it goes towards a reception aka party for everyone else anyway.

My wife's parents are lower middle class. Mine are much more well off. We started planning a wedding and added up everything we'd have to pay for (with my parent's help) and said f that. We went to Vegas and neither of us regret it. We were saving for a down-payment on a house at the time.

No regrets. Ours was a lot but there specific reasons for it. Nothing wrong with either way imo.

I don’t see where grown arse adults would ask their parents for money to get married.
Live within your means and save and pay for it yourself unless like in my case my parents gave me a certain about of money they were comfortable giving. I didn’t ask for anything.

Wife I discussed we were going to go destination if people want to come cool if not no pressure.
She talked to her mom next thing you know big local. I should have realized what a dominating force MIL was at that time.

Who has a 50k wedding and pays for any of it themselves? Our wedding was expensive, but the in laws paid. There was no option to give the money to us or have a big wedding. Just the big wedding. So, it was no problem to me.

My parents are poor so I knew there was no money coming from them. My husband's parents are middle class...but were still frantically trying to rebuild retirement money after it tanked in 2008.
So we knew not to even ask our parents...plus we were both in our 30s and had both been living on our own since we were 18-19.
Like Boo said...wedding costs add up. Even with our very simple beach wedding and only having like 25 guests...we still spent like 10-12K total(but that also included travel costs).
I would say nowadays you need at least 20-30K to do an average wedding.

Use that $20k for two weeks in Bora Bora.

My wife and I had a $35K+ wedding, and though it was beautiful, we both wish we would have done other things with that money. It wasn't even a big wedding, but the venue, food, etc. were all great.
I really think we spent so much because that's what our families expected, but they didn't pay for anything.

Upper class people in every town are spending way in excess of 50k on weddings now (not saying its a good idea, but it definitely happens)
