So the mascot for the team they were playing were the Indians right? I remember the cheerleaders who do signs like that for football games with some saying based on the mascot of the other team.. "Hunt the bears", "scalp the Indians". What's wrong with this?

No. But what if a school is in a town named Carthage, and an opposing school makes a banner about wiping them out and salting the earth in their town. Is that OK? If so, what makes it OK? The fact that it was a really, really long time ago? The fact that it wasn't something the U.S. did?
I can agree that the banner was in poor taste, but it really doesn't elicit much more than a "meh" reaction from me. I certainly don't think it deserves any sort of official punishment.

We played Catholic High in high school and our cheerleaders banner was
A care bear bending over with a rainbow coming out of its arse.
And in big rainbow letters it said
"Straighten the Gay Bears"
I remember when they picked up the banner we could hear the Crowds shock from behind the banner lol.

One of our closest rivals in high school was the Indians and I'm pretty sure that exact break through poster was used.
There was never really an uproar with that, yhe problem came during basketball season while playing McCreary and the run through said Beat Mc-Queer-y Central with a picture of a Raider in a pink skirt.
