LOL Wut? I am sick and brainwashed for wanting to live in an area where I can walk and ride my bike to places instead of wasting hours of my life and risking death riding around in a stupid car.

Right, because all of your beliefs don't apply to all urban areas.

America living as dense as any european city is just a bad idea. And walkable cities need density to work.

No doubt. I think those areas should be taxed accordingly, even though they are woefully undertaxed for their consumption.

Anecdotally, Denmark is consistently rated the happiest country on earth, and they are heavily invested in walking and bike paths

No issue there. Its the utopians who think everyone should live in their version of utopia.

Move to a neighborhood that fits your criteria.

If you want to walk, carrying heavy bags of groceries back to your place in the hot and humid New Orleans summer, enjoy. I would be happier riding in air condition with the groceries in my trunk.

so a fraction of the city being walkable makes a walkable city?

Yes I'm 100% positive that's the reason.

Do you consider New York walkable?

I think walkable neighborhoods and parts of town can work in any size city.

The amount of money that is spent on roads, sewer, power lines, etc so you can live in bum frick nowhere is heavily subsidized by the folks in the more urban areas.

You can piss and moan but that is just reality.

I just do not understand the hostility towards wanting a city to be designed with pedestrians as the center and not fricking cars.

I have 4 restaurants and a bar that I can and do walk to often. It is so nice to walk out of my house and be to the restaurant in 2 blocks and not have to worry about driving or parking or if I drink too much how I will get home. I can also hop on my bike and jump on the trails and be in downtown in less than 6 miles; it is frickin awesome.

It is much more freedom than being chained to a stupid car.

I have never understand the obsession most people have with cars. They are giant money pits that keep us all poorer under a stupid delusion that we are "freer" because of them.

Tax the frick of the suburbs bros so they pay their actual fair share for the cost of all the damn roads, sewer, and electrical infrastructure that was build for them to even exist.

I don't think anyone has a issue with that.

Taking thw step to banning cars to takeover the infrastructure they funded is a bit much for most people.

Screw that, a car is freedom.

I live in a walkable area, can hit most restaurants and bars. Its such a minor convenience.

Places that organically grow support walkable areas far better than you urban planners can do.

Do you honestly believe the way cities are currently designed is the best and most efficient way?

I did; we can still do better and make cities better by limiting cars as they are a net drain and waste so much valuable space with all the roads and giant parking lots.

What do you consider walkable then? WHD and Uptown (various areas) are definitely walkable.

Where the vast majority of the city is accessible by foot or public transportation that is reasonable and easy. More than one option for public transportation. Often times being able to completely sustain typically daily living without the need of using those would be ideal. Being able to sustain daily living without owning a personal vehicle would be necessary to be a walkable city.

i will concede that i havent tried this in New Orleans myself. But form everything ive seen, i dont see those qualifiers being possible, or at least without making some serious concessions to your own life that wouldnt make it more hassle than worth.

Will only say that you are wrong. You can sustain in New Orleans without a car. Much easier with a car, but that is true pretty much anywhere, no matter how walkable the city is.

Most of this board does though. They are stuck in a cookie cutter house where they cannot walk to anything. It's shitty design and bad zoning laws.

LOL....All those power centers and shitty strip malls with giant parking lots are only there because of bad policy known as parking minimums.

Get rid of the parking minimums and you can make better use of the spaces instead having giant islands of concrete everywhere that heats up the area and leads to more flooding problems.

For whom?

This is the problem. A small subset of reddit type people think their views predominate and their desires are most important. Everyone should adapt to their views.

Utopians are horrible people.
