Minimum wage when I started working in 1970 was $1.45/hr. Currently it's $.7.25/hr. That would be a raise of $.13/hr over 46 years. In a country as great as this one is supposed to be, no one working full time should have an income below the poverty line. Big business is just using poor, uneducated people to benefit themselves. I find this sickening.

They are poor because they are uneducated. There should be no required minimum age for people over 18 years old, if a adult wants to work for 50 cents per hour that is their choice. The market will determine what a suitable wage for a particular job should be. Without government mandated minimum pay for every job people would begin to understand the relationship between being uneducated and being poor.

Jesus said lots of shite, nobody can remember all of it. The important things are "treat others how you think they should be treated" and "make peace through war to inherit the earth". The rest is all filler.

Oh, I only ever read King James Version. This must be NIV, and I guess that is what folks on here read.

You think that's bad, Fox News released a translation where Jesus gave the go ahead on adultery for the top tax bracket.

You're obviously uninformed or trolling. If it's the latter, GFY. If it's the former, you have to realize how labor costs factor into the value of a dollar. Earning minimum wage, regardless of the nominal level, will always leave you relatively poor.

The issue with people in minimum wage jobs that people don't mention so much is one of their main issues is a willingness to show up regularly.

Nobody who can't get to work regularly deserves $15 an hour

I have often wondered if you had a clue.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.

That's a life on poor decisions. The $7.50 is but a small piece of that puzzle. And the mother is obese by all medical definitions.

I seriously wonder if that was intentionally filmed/edited to both get sympathy from liberals and infuriate conservatives.

Not a single mention in that video of the mother looking for a better paying job. If you're in that situation and you settle for 7.50, then you deserve no sympathy. She's part time and her shifts are getting cut, yeah let's just accept it. And her child is going to daycare at no cost to herself, so it's not like she can't work a 40 hour job.

I swear to God some people just give up once they realize going to school isn't a realistic option, like somehow going to a 4 year university is the only way to make ends meet.

I feel sorry for the lady in the video, but raising minimum wage just isn't a long term solution. How anyone doesn't see that this will just be passed on to the consumer (her) is beyond me

Show of hands how many think this but then are all in on trade protections that Trump is attempting to form complete sentences about.

CHiPs for the kid.

Woman doesn't make enough to get free healthcare through ACA.

She would have to go to a charity hospital for her own care.

She was a terrible choice for the face of the story. Not once did she mention (unless it was omitted) seeking more employment, learning a skill, or anything to improve her situation, other than her "hope" that things will get better one day.

Even if she doesn't have the skills for a better job she's got plenty of time to get a second job.

You aren't born with skills. You have to work hard to become good at something, even if you don't like doing it. Hardly anyone graduates from college, let alone high school with any real marketable skills

Using the political leanings of this site as a baseline, most of y'all would put me to the left of Bernie Sanders and this kind of story even makes my arse itch.

My husband and I did things the "right way". Both of us have bachelor's degrees and I have a master's. Waited to have kids until we got married and could afford them. We save what we can and don't spend lavishly. We only take a big vacation every four years or so, we don't buy new expensive cars, we don't live in a house we can't afford - short story, we live within our means.

But yet, our son is about to start his senior year and short of him getting a golf scholarship (he has some interest from some smaller schools, so fingers crossed) it is going to be very hard on us financially to pay for his college. Even in state tuition is crazy expensive and he won't be eligible for any kind of financial aid because we make "too much money".

We have college funds and the like but what we have saved will maybe cover 50-60% of the REAL costs of sending a kid to college. It leaves me sleepless some nights.

It sucks that if we had decided to forgo getting degrees and getting married before procreating and then doing the bare minimum workwise and letting the government take care of the rest we wouldn't worry about paying for his college because then he would be eligible for all kinds of free money and programs.

"Life on $7.50 an hour" + all the government money she gets doesn't look a whole lot different than"Life on $100,000 per year" with no government money.

Hell, my kids don't get $200 shoes and shite. That's not need, that's want.

I'm rambling at this point but even my hippie liberal arse is sick and tired of this shite.
