Pell Grants aren't as much as you think. I grew up poor and qualified for Pell Grants. This was back in the mid to late 90s and I got maybe 1500-2000 a year. I still had to take out student loans for college to pay for college. Granted...I was VERY thankful for every penny I got from Pell Grants....but it's not like it's a massive amount of money to pay for all of college costs.
Add to that....I didn't have parents that could pay for any of my living expenses in college...unless I lived in the tiny house in a really bad part of BR that my family lived in. I shared a bunk bed in a tiny bedroom with my 8 year old sister at the time(so living at home was something I avoided at all costs...shacked up with a bf instead). Even if I did suck it up and stay home...I still had to pay for my car, gas, car insurance, etc. Many of those expenses I used a combination of the student jobs I worked to pay, student loans, the grants....and the rest on credit cards.

I agree with most of your post, but this is some extreme hyperbole. People like to act like it is a pride thing that keeps them from just mailing it in, but thats bologna. If this was even close to being true, people would be taking this route hand over fist. There is no way people can think this is remotely accurate.

People working those jobs/living those lives live check to check. If anything bad happens....serious illness, car trouble, whatever.....they are fricked. They have no way to realistically save up for emergencies like other people would be able to. If the kid was to get really sick...likely Medicaid would cover the kid. But like another poster mentioned...that mom likely doesn't qualify for free healthcare...so she is screwed. So that means instead of going to the doctor at the first sign of illness....she waits and waits until it is something serious.
Yes there are lots of lazy people content living this way because it requires little effort for them at times. Yes, it doesn't compare to the levels of poverty seen in third world countries. But it's still at times two steps away from the brink of being in serious trouble. I will gladly take the position I have now, and my debt, and my taxes....than be in their shoes.

What is missing in America today is shame. Shame would cause more people in this condition to do better. But we have taught multiple generations that there is no shame in doing nothing for yourself and expecting others to provide for you.
Another problem is the welfare system. You have to be really motivated to get out because the system punishes you when you try.

It ain't meant to be how you make a living and feed your family. Gain skills and experience and move up.

Both of these are true. The Stigma of welfare was removed for "dignity" which gave us the permanent welfare class.
Graph posted earlier (welfare cliff) shows why improving yourself is not rewarded in the current system and it's by design. Politicians need a massive underclass.
If you work extra hours (above a certain point) you lose benefits. You're better off working 40 hours (or 20) and maximizing benefits than you are working a second job or overtime. Or even getting a raise, because it's eaten up by the lost benefits.

Should have clarified "most" not all is what I was implying. My wording was not used in the correct tense.
As a nurse, do trashy people give you the most headache with their neediness and complaining? How do you deal with that?

My gf works at McDonalds and started at $7.50 as well. She worked her arse off now and now has her on store. Sorry, but I don't buy this sob story, chances are she doesn't care about the job or just doesn't have the drive.

I made a thread awhile back about living on min wage. LINK
In most cases, the only thing holding a person back is the choices he or she makes in life. The most significant detriment to the advancement of low income people is the propaganda spewed by "community activists" and politicians about wealth inequality, putting blame on higher income individuals.
I came up with these numbers on my own. They are ballpark, but they should paint the picture. I'm not saying this is an easy life, but if it sucks so bad, the motivation should be there to pull yourself out. If you don't pull yourself out, then does it really suck that bad? Remember that this is minimum wage. One is not supposed to be comfortable doing the jobs that make this wage, otherwise more people would be flipping burgers.
$7.25 per hour, work 50 hrs per week. $18,850 not accounting for 1.5x your pay rate for overtime. You take home approximately $16,550 after taxes. This leaves you about $1,379 to work with per month.
Monthly Budget
$400 food
$400 housing*
$100 Utility Bills (I live in a 2 br relatively inefficient apt in NOLA and my worst utility bills are about $150 per month).
$50 Phone Bill
$0-50 healthcare (based on single male in his 20's from heathcare.gov)
This leaves about $379-429 per month, with which a lot can be done. Or a lot can be wasted. If you get 1.5x base pay for overtime, that comes out to be about an extra $100 per month after taxes.
I put an asterisk next to housing because I understand it may be extremely difficult to find housing in a city for that price other than the projects. However, if the people to whom this message is directed would take care of their cheap housing and not cause so much crime in such neighborhoods, then I'd venture to say that these cheap neighborhoods would not be so unappealing. Or you could find a roommate in a similar low income situation.
Yeah you may be slumming it for a while if this is your life, but go learn something. Go to the library. Go work your way up somewhere. Stop doing nothing except blame.
On top of this, I believe that higher income people would have a greater desire to provide money out of their own pocket, rather than through government programs, to assist people living in these situations if there was an actual effort to better oneself. The question is, if I gave you an extra $100 per month out of my own pocket out of pure generosity, what would you do with it?

Y'all are some judgmental assholes. And for those of you who call yourselves Christian, please stop. I don't go to church anymore, but I remember enough from Sunday School to know that Jesus' message was a little different.
So you think Christians should want the government to raise the minimum wage?

My wife's step daughter from a previous marriage worked a shift at two separate Sonic restaurants (70-80 hrs a week) without taking govt. assistance, with three kids from a bad marriage and she had her own store in two years.
Now, she supports her family with a middle class income. If you work min. wage for a couple of years and aren't at least a shift supervisor, you're basically unemployable to anyone else.

Entry level, low skill employees are very likely to be crappy employees from my experience. Following a payday, I can be assured at least a couple will not show up.
