wish someone would have the balls to do this today with education employees who refuse to go back to work.

I remember this. Friends father was an ATC but he was a supervisor and couldn’t be in the Union. So he wasn’t fired. Dude made unreal bank working double and triple time OT until the whole thing resolved.

Reagan taught everyone how to deal with unions. Most people are too nutless to do the same tho.

NPR's Planet Money did a fantastic podcast on the day "Reagan broke the unions"

Basically explains how up until then the populace was very sympathetic to unions, but Reagan framed it in such a way that other industries and businesses had the confidence to challenge the unions.

Within a year of it, B schools throughout the country, starting with Wharton included it as a case study in labor relations.

I've read that the Russians were paying very close attention to how Reagan handled this crisis. Would he stick to his guns, and fire a large swath of controllers, or would he knuckle under and give in?

His response would show the Russians just who they were dealing with.

My dad was one of the controllers that was fired.

He still loved Reagan regardless and happily voted for him again.
