Background - uber rich liberal, who inherited all his money from daddy, gave a big gift to U of Alabama law school, then started acting like a POS.

LINK

quote:

The emails also showed Culverhouse’s interest in influencing student admissions, scholarships, faculty hiring and firing, and the employment status of the dean of the law school.

Basically, by donating a bunch of daddy's money, he thought he could run the law school.

quote:

In the May 24 email from Culverhouse to University President Stuart Bell, Culverhouse asked for the return of $10 million because he was not happy with candidates for an endowed chair position in his name and Culverhouse demeaned the dean of the law school Mark Brandon as well as Bell.

quote:

“I wanted a renowned Constitutional law professor. Someone to make academic waves...These are nice additions to a 3880 faculty with an insecure dean-but they are hardly nationally stature constitutional law figures," Culverhouse wrote in the email. “I believe Mark, you and I come from different concepts. I want the best law school, not a mediocre law school, whose ranking is a simple mathematical manipulation. I also know you have never dealt with a gift of my size-either for endowed professor or for a something as large as to change the name of the law school. You are unprepared. Mark will always be a small town, insecure dean. The outside world frightens him.”

Basically, all these hillbilly Alabama law school people don't know what they are doing, and they should just listen to this clown.

quote:

According to an email from law school dean Mark Brandon to Bell, Culverhouse had advocated for the firing of 10 law school professors and wanted to have access to observe law classes at his leisure during a campus visit.

The law school ended up telling him to pound sand, and gave him his gift back.

Seems like UA did the right thing here. I wonder if LSU ever has to deal with crap like this, and we just never hear about it.

Nah.

POS = thinking that a donation allows you the ability to run the law school, influence who is on the faculty and who gets admitted, what the school should be teaching, etc.

Maybe a good nationally known constitutional law professor would be good for the law school, but that's not for this knucklehead to decide.

Alabama clearly thought it was for him to decide so they returned his money.

Telling him to pound sand would've been keeping his money and doing nothing he wanted.

I can relate to this guy. I've donated probably $20,000 to my local Chili's over the years, yet Phil the Manager is still in charge, despite my frequent requests to have him fired for strictly enforcing their BS "2 Long Island Ice Teas per person" rule.

It's been a real showdown of forces, if you will.

But that would have required keeping his name on the school, implying a relationship was there.

That's usually how it works with all large charitable donations. Money buys you influence and decision making ability.

I've never seen anyone ask for their money back. Usually they just don't donate any future money if their wants are not carried out.

That's a lot of change to give back. I would have told the guy to eat a bowl of dicks. A gift is a gift.

Culverhouse disagreed with the stance of UA to stay out of political positioning so basically by your definition Culverhouse is a POS...your words not mine

All emails

To really grasp it you need to read all the emails in this link. He’s a fricking nut job who thinks his money allows him to play god. It doesn’t. They returned it. It’s really a bizarre read.

Start at the bottom and read up.

Right so they returned the money because they didn't want to do what he wanted.

Obviously the money buys that kind of influence. They didn't want his input so they returned the money.

The entire Culverhouse family is a disaster. His dad (a real beauty) almost destroyed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But they are rich, and in this day and age that’s all that matters.
