In an unassuming building in Galliano, Louisiana, Alzina Toups makes some of the best food you’ll ever eat. But while her Jambalaya, fried shrimp and other garlic-laden Cajun staples are sure to bless your tongue and break your heart, they aren’t so easy to come by. Alzina doesn’t take walk-ins, and reservations—which book up a year in advance—can only be made by reaching her by landline.

Anyone here been there? Is it that good?

She’s been cooking since she was a young girl. If she isn’t already, she has to be close to 90 years old.

I’ve eaten there twice with Crosby Tug guys. Good but nothing special IMO.

Her granddaughter cooks with her. It’s not a restaurant it’s her son’s old welding shop. We’ve taken a van a couple times with a group and enjoyed it. Bring some good wine. It’s only I think $40 a person or close to that. Good stuff.

I ate there a few years ago and the gumbo was damn good.

Thanks for pointing this out... never heard of her.

Looks like a fun experience for a small-med sized party even if the food isn't stellar. Love the authentic accent.

Seems like the booked a year in advance bit is a marketing ploy. There’s not enough people within an hour of Galliano to book a restaurant for a year.

Has anyone here ever tried to walk in?

It’s not a restaurant-you can’t walk in. She has a minimum requirement and doesn’t like to mix parties.

But you can normally get a spot. I’ve made reservations for our group about a month or so out. She gets a lot of French and other European tourists.

Outside of special dates even the best restaurants rarely are booked. PLaces like the French Laundry (they have changed their reservation system recently to Tock) and even Osteria Francescana do go out near that long and they are some of the most sought after dinner reservations in the world.

Food is delicious. She believes in simple cooking nothing complicated.

She even uses chicken feet for some food because they are high in gelatin.

Now, I know why the Walmart in Galliano carries chicken feet.
