Thinking buying a telescope. Any OT amateur astronomers recommendations?

Do some research online and then check craigslist.
People get into and out of the hobby pretty quickly, so you can get some good deals on nice ones pretty easily.

Get a Newtonian reflector. Refractors are super expensive for the same size as reflectors.
Lookup companies like Orion and Zhumell.
Also remember that eyepieces can cost just as much as your scope. There's lots of places you can buy them used, I started off looking at websites like astromart.com
Just remember that the best scope in the world can't help you if you have bad light pollution, so factor that into how much you spend.

First, find a good spot for viewing. Anyplace like a normal suburban neighborhood will probably have too much outdoor electric lighting.

Celestron makes some good scopes in all price ranges. Don't go for the biggest telescope you can afford - save some money for a good set of eyepieces ("lenses"). A good quality 2x Barlow is going to double your magnification. A medium sized telescope with a good set of quality eyepieces is better than a bigass scope with crappy eyepieces.
Here's the formula you need to know:
magnification= focal length/eyepiece size
For instance, my Celestron Nexstar 130SLT has a focal length of 650mm. If I use my 9mm eyepiece,, I get a magnification of 72x. If I add on my 2x Barlow, I now have a 144x magnification. If I use my 3x Barlow, I'm around 217x magnification. Or I can use my 2.3mm eyepiece for 282 magnification, and that will give a better view than using both Barlows on the 9mm eyepiece. You can't just go as big as you want - they say with amateur scopes you're only going to have a useable range of around 200-250. For the most part, that's true. But if I pair my 2x and 3x Barlows together with my 9mm eyepiece, I'll have 432x magnification. I can use that on something really bright like the moon, but you have to struggle to get a fleeting view.
But with 144x magnification (9mm eyepiece and my 2x Barlow, you can see everything you'll want to see, i.e. Orion Nebula, Jupiter and 4 moons, Saturn w/rings, Venus in phases, etc.).
Here are a few examples of my moon shots with my stuff…

Those are great photos.
Incidentally, my favorite astronomical phenomenon to view is the comet. I was lucky to get a decent view of the last comet to pass our way using only my binoculars.

And the mount is just as important as the scope. The mount on my scope is a little shaky. It looks stable at first, but I live a few hundred feet away from the interstate. If I set up the scope in my driveway, I get a vibration that affects the scope. I do better setting it up in the grass and weigh down the legs with a few bricks to help stabilize it. If you bump the scope, it will jiggle for a few seconds. Get a decent, midsize scope, and spend extra money for one with a really solid mount. The stability of the mount is a lot more important than all the tech stuff (I rarely use the GPS thing to find objects - all the major stuff I've found on my own, and most of that by accident). If it comes with a good quality 27mm and 9mm eye piece, all you need to add is a good 2x Barlow, and then maybe add something like a 2.3mm eyepiece later.

Those photos are actually just from holding my iPhone up to the eyepiece. 
If I remember correctly, the first 2 are at 144x (9mm and 2x Barlow), and the last one is at 217 (9mm with both 2x and 3x Barlow).

A family friend loans us a Meade Model 395 refractor. The kids and I thought that he moon views were pretty cool. We looked online and found where the different Apollo missions landed and tried to match those to what we were seeing.
They also liked being able to see the four largest moons of Jupiter.
Would I buy a nice instrument like this on my own? Probably not new but if I could find a good deal on a used one, I'd buy it.

I have a nice dobsonian I like. It's an Orion XT8. Not too pricey. As others said, get good eyepieces.
