Upvote for not saying rescue.

Horse racing has the same problem. They aren’t rescued. They didn’t have a bad life.
They retired and moved on to new jobs. Drives me crazy.

we have 2 mutts (that i love) but the advocacy group was at a pet store a few years back and said they were amazing pets. let us play with one and they seemed really cool. i'd have to be in the right mood to want to get one that size again.
love my current dogs, but i'm probably getting a lap dog next go round.

We have 3 of them. I joke with my wife all the time at how ugly they are
, but they are really almost the perfect chill dog. They sleep almost all day and are cuddle-bugs. Think of them as giant cats.
Oh and if you do end up with one, be sure to buy some dog beds especially if you have hardwood floors. Many of them were raised on the track and will never sit. Hardwoods are harder for them to stand on, so they'll live in their beds. Put them near the sun and they'll never move!

My cousin used to be the Louisiana president of some retired Greyhound adoption charity. She'd borrow my tag-along bbq for big events they'd have at LA Tech tailgates. She always tried the hard sell on me but I was travelling too much for the kind of high maintenance dog I took them to be.. I always figured she was full of shite about how lazy they were but lots of people here seem to agree so maybe so. They are cool dogs though, very friendly.

Do the retired ones come well trained and house broken?

you’re doing a good thing by adopting an older dog that needs a home.
We have a retired greyhound, and that's exactly why we chose her. I was told when we adopted her that she'd been socialized with other dogs and some cats, but the adoption agency advised me to keep an eye on her if I take her to the dog park, just in case. My wife named her Luna and she is the absolute best dog. Great with my nieces and nephews and the neighborhood kids. She's super chill at home and great on car trips too.

A very good friend's wife is a vet and when I told her I wanted to look at getting a dog, the first breed out of her mouth was greyhound adoption.
When I told her I was currently in an apartment and that my autistic 9yo son is VERY wary of dogs she assured me it was a good fit generally speaking. Her opinion mirrored the couch potato w/a couple outings a day you've heard.

We had whippets growing up. They need a little room to run for a couple minutes a day, but otherwise they are the laziest dogs knows to man. They are lap dog and love to be around people all the time. Ours would just sun themselves and lay around all day. If you do walk them in an I fenced yard, you need to keep them on leash at all times. They are sighthounds and are bred to chase small game, and you won’t catch them.

Our most prized Whippet won best of breed, best of group, and finished in 4th place overall at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show at Madison Square Garden.
It takes alot of work and effort to get to that point. That's why those dogs are worth what they are.

This was my moms Italian greyhound that passed a few years back. Loved getting under the covers

I know two people who have adopted them. One friend had one and he was a terrific dog! Other friends has had MANY--usually 4 or 5 at a time and just loves them!

I had one about 10 years ago. She had terrible separation anxiety and it was apparent she was abused (which is not uncommon in the racing field). It wasn't too long before she snapped at my pregnant wife. We had to bring her back to the rescue organization.
So be careful...you don't know their background and it's more than likely they have been abused/mistreated. They are beautiful dogs though.

I fell into a youtube black hole a few months ago and watched way too many videos of English folks adopting retired greyhounds as pets, and they all seemed to make great companions. Good luck!

This was our girl (6) before we adopted her. She was awesome. We lost her to bone cancer at about 9.
Only issue we had was we couldn't bring her to the dog park. Once she started chasing another dog, she'd catch them and thr predator drive would kick in.
