This is very accurate. 85 is about the tops for even us fast drivers. I can do 90 in a group but that starts to feel unsafe at that point.

Hell here in Cola I've seen Richland County deputies and State Troopers cruise in the left lane with no other cars in the two right lanes.

I got pulled over for passing in the right lane. Someone had slowed the left lane down a to a crawl and the right lane was pretty clear so I took it. This was like four lanes one way (so eight total). I was speeding but he said I was pulled over for passing in the right lane.

But he left me off with a warning.

I did not get so lucky

This is unequivocally false. At 80/85, people start limiting themselves. The vast majority of drivers are uncomfortable driving 85+ and only those with cars that handle well will drive at “100” the way you describe. The difference between safely handling a car at 85 and 100 is exponentially more difficult as boundaries start being pushed. Most drivers are not capable of driving at those speeds nor do their vehicles safely maneuver at those speeds.

What you say is certainly true - but if the posted speed becomes 85 on all interstates then it changes things. Car manufacturers will have to develop and put out cars with new consumer expectations in mind. Also, as people get used to driving 85 as the base speed limit, people will get comfortable and then you will see the envelope get pushed.

I used to drive really fast in my younger days and if nobody was around me i would sometimes look down and be going 95 without even really realizing what my speed was.

As another poster said the large discrepancies in actual driving speeds would be the real danger. As well as just accidents at higher speeds being more dangerous because they involve more energy as a general principle.

Autobahn has cars rated for what speeds they can go. So if you have a lower quality car you get a lower speed limit.

A few weeks ago, I was on I-55 around Manchac and I saw a LSP pull over an a-hole who brake checked an 18 wheeler in the right lane.

People wo brake check an 18 wheeler that is going 65 mph have a death wish.

I doubt manufacturers will do this based off of fuel milage and increased costs. They already have different levels of performance. I don't think the vast majority are going to speed up. They struggle to maintain highway speed as is. We just need them out of the left lane.

It is all a pure hypothetical but would be an interesting case study - just depends on what consumers would demand.

I once drove through South Dakota where they have an 80mph speed limit on the interstate. You're right, I didn't really feel comfortable going above 85.

Trucks are the limiting factor. You can't have everyone safely going 100 next to a truck going 70

Anyone ever ask a German how they deal with slow drivers that don’t get out of the passing lane on the autobahn? I have. They couldn’t comprehend the question because “people wouldn’t do that, it’s against the law. Slower traffic moves over. It’s what you do”.

Bingo. I had some of my german relatives come visit a few years back. Needless to say having them in the car wile driving on the interstate was pretty hilarious. The look of utter confusion, then sheer horror, was priceless

I count four traffic violations in this one paragraph. Seems like these folks are the ones who need to get a grip on their driving. It's called sharing the road

Exactly. That's why she needs to move to the right and share the road with people that may be traveling faster than her.

You ain't ever seen a "Slower traffic keep right" sign?

About time some one enforces the law.

Many states have a law about staying in the left lane. It is considered a passing lane, and you yield to faster traffic.

Illinois used to ticket, if you drive in left lane, and weren't passing anyone.
