I think you could sue for that. Seriously. You have to walk out of the store before they accuse you.
You sound like some of my shoplifting clients back in the day. There are multiple crimes you can commit inside a store prior to crossing the threshold which are lesser included offenses in shoplifting but are stand-alone chargeable if caught prior to leaving the store.

Just the thought of stepping foot in one of their stores gives me the chills. I hate that place with a passion. Trash Central USA

quote:I would think that their business model has been pretty successful. I'm sure that losses incurred at self checkout are offset by some marginal increase in shopper and/or basket volume along with savings recognized through fewer employees acting as cashiers. If they were losing money on the deal I'm sure they'd suspend its operation.
If Walmart is that worried about their assets then get rid of the self checkout and hire some employees.
But I'm saying that they're conducting business how they see fit, and OP (or you or I) are not compelled to patronize them. I also don't see any reason to threaten legal action because they reviewed a shopper's video transaction. OP was free to leave at any time.

I’ve accidentally gotten away with shoplifting a couple times from self checkout. What happened is I wasn’t paying attention an set a bag of checked out goods on top of a canned good I didn’t scan yet and didn’t notice it until I got to my truck.
If you're like me, you've more than made up for it with all the stuff you've paid for, but left at the store.

Code Criminal Procedure Art. 215. Detention and arrest of shoplifters
A.(1) A peace officer, merchant, or a specifically authorized employee or agent of a merchant, may use reasonable force to detain a person for questioning on the merchant's premises, for a length of time, not to exceed sixty minutes, unless it is reasonable under the circumstances that the person be detained longer, when he has reasonable cause to believe that the person has committed a theft of goods held for sale by the merchant, regardless of the actual value of the goods. The merchant or his employee or agent may also detain such a person for arrest by a peace officer. The detention shall not constitute an arrest.

Did the “sentry” ask to see your receipt on the way out?
That’s unconstitutional, you know

That part didn't happen. He's being dramatic for the OT. Side note, he's trashy and they were watching his trashy arse.

With all the stealing I see from self checkout, I’m glad they are taking steps to stop it. The automatic sensors do weird shite on those self checkouts. Less shoplifting = lower prices, stores not closing down

Maybe by Walmart policy, but legally that is incorrect.
