When did this become the thing?

I know it's been happening for years, but does it really make the message any more effective to have a group of people standing behind the podium? The local mayor, governor, or FEMA rep speaks while various government officials stand behind them staring straight ahead. This seems to be the the M.O for most government press conferences now.

Instead of paying attention to the speaker, I find myself looking at the mindless glares from the people in the back. Or to the sign language person, especially the ones in Florida. Those chicks have really been getting into signing. Their facial expressions are the best.

Here is an example from the one that just finished

How many deaf people are sitting home alone with nobody to explain what's going on AND no closed captioning on their TV?

If they have tvs with no close captioning, what do they do with those tvs the rest of the time when there is no government press conference?

Or to the sign language person

When Jindal was governor here and he was giving storm press conferences, talking 100000 words per minute, his sign language guy was the star of the show. Poor guy looked like he was going to get carpal tunnel

And was it Mary Landrieu who always looked like she had some sort of nervous tic when she would stand on the podium of one of these?

That dude stood like that for the entire press conference. He didn't blink and didn't move.

The looks on their faces, I sure hope the Cajun Navy comes and bails us out.

I mean, typical govt, bunch of people standing around, you can't tell me those people couldn't find something to do with the urgency of the storm.

I'm more intrigued by the signers.
Do they always expect deaf people in the audience?
Any broadcast of this should provide closed captioning, therefore this person is not necessary

Exactly. I have a difficult time focusing on the actual information in these things because this is the type of shite I'm pondering and focusing on instead. Do they not realize how they might actually be hindering more folks like me than they are helping the number of deaf people in the state who have a TV but no closed captioning?
