I think these two should rot in prison and I'm not trying to defend them but there is a stupid factor at play here where they probably didn't comprehend the physics of what they were doing.
I remember I had a high school science teacher who told us the story of when he was riding down the highway as a teen and he had some apples in the car. He saw a guy hitchhiking and decided to toss him a free apple. The apple knocked the guy over because it was traveling over 50 mph. My teacher didn't realize this because he lightly tossed it from the car but didn't factor in that the car was doing 50 mph. That was a physics lesson learned the hard way, even for a guy who was smart enough to become a science teacher.
