re: There aren’t enough skilled workers and guys under 40 willing to work with their hands

Market will eventually sort it out. Right now your standard of living is about the same for an insurance agent and a skilled electrician. No brainer for most people. When the plumber starts pulling down $250K take home people will take note and respond accordingly.

You wouldn’t believe the simple tasks that the under 40 crowd pay for someone to do. I swear they don’t own any tools…..not even a screwdriver.
and the over-40 crowd has to ask me to print their spreadsheet to fit one page

I hate that I'm close to that dividing line these days

Too many kids are told they are special growing up and think they are too good for it. It's people over 40's fault for raising them that way.

It’s not that people don’t want to do the work, it’s the demographics alone tell you there aren’t enough men under 40 to fill the roles that are being vacated by the 55+ crowd as they retire.
This country (and nearly every other post-industrial country on earth) is going to have an interesting 20-30 years ahead as we adjust to the new normal.

We have a renovation going on and the architect is intimidated by the craftsman because the know more, and make more money than she does.
Its funny to watch.

Can I make 6 figures and work from my home office?

I’m 23 and work on a cattle farm. Beats sitting inside all day. I need to keep moving and I enjoy each day being something different

with all recent tech layoffs your workforce is readily available

But I’m only part time so this will be interesting

Insert Adam Smith here, supply/demand and wage.

Problem is blue collar work is stigmatized. The schools, Hollywood, and the news media constantly tell them you're less of a person if you aren't college educated.
I volunteered for Habitat and Baton Rouge Green in college and enjoyed it. Also spent one year working outdoors after Katrina.
I enjoy my current desk job but I'd be down with working construction or landscaping if I made enough.

Yep. The day I can can charge 300-400 per hour and keep business coming through the door is the day I'll become a mechanic.
Until then I'll keep it as a weekend hobby.
The sad part is I would do it for $400 per day.

I totally understand getting into the AC in the South. I took the same route.

Why would I roll around in shite, mud, or dust, or be in an attic in August for $20/hour when I can work at Chick Fil a or Uber for $16/hour?
And spare me the plumbers make $300k a year argument. If that were true people would want to be plumbers.

Plumbers, HVAC and welders folks can make a hell of a living these days.
Absolutely no reason to pay the stupidly high college tuitions costs for a 4 year degree unless it's in a field like Engineering, Architecture, med school path or a SPECIFIC business degree.

I am under 40, and make more than skilled workers. Therefore, pay is an issue. My decision to not do skilled labor is not about about work ethic. I do manual labor plenty, but it’s for something I enjoy and on my own damn time. I’m not going to go fix other peoples shite for a living just so boomers will pat me on the back.

What do you think is fair?
Whatever the breakeven point is to fill the labor demand with enough labor supply to meet consumer demand.
It’s not a difficult concept.

Miners average 110k a year locally. Easy work.
Mechanics came make 200k easily here. Alyeska pays welders 150-200k a year for pipeline work.
Theres work that pays, most are too lazy to do it, or even find out about it.
Get a union apprenticeship, no student loans, paid while learning, start at 60k plus.
Lots of dudes with degrees work outside here, its like 70 degrees in summer.
