Comedian Theo Von’s popular podcast brings listeners inside the workings of his mullet-topped head.

Bees are Satan’s little German shepherds.

Spring is that time you can hear flowers start to put deodorant on.

A bridge is just a road that’s…brave as f——.

On “This Past Weekend,” Von has traded laid-back musings with fellow comedians and stars like Rainn Wilson and Post Malone. He has turned some episodes into hourslong therapy sessions, hinting at childhood wounds, addiction and problems with intimacy. His mix of laughter and pain has drawn an audience of 3.4 million on YouTube and made him one of Spotify’s top podcasters.

In August, he talked about drug addiction with Donald Trump—telling the then-presidential candidate “cocaine will turn you into a damn owl homie”—and in an instant, he became the bro heard around the world. Weeks later, Trump ally and Ultimate Fighting Championship Chief Executive Dana White thanked Von among other podcasters on the stage of Trump’s election-night victory celebration.

We colluded to keep him off of KLSU because we assumed he would suck at broadcasting.

My bad.

Edit: that’s not totally how it went, but it makes a better story.

Even though he’s a local I just don’t get his shtick. I’ve listened and tried it’s just not appealing for me. Happy for him though, I’ve met him he appears to be genuinely good guy.

The episode with John Mulaney was great; addiction material was funny but poignant.

similar to how a certain political party recently tried to appeal to the straight white male at the very last minute, by wearing camo hats, streaming Madden, and going skeet shooting.

and it came off as incredibly ingenuine and desperate.

Is he the nephew of Roland von Kurnatowski, the guy who used to own Tipitina's and then offed himself?

I think his best episodes are when he interviews regular people like garbage men and plumbers. I can’t take him seriously enough to listen to him interviewing Trump or Bernie Sanders.

I like his podcast and the one-liners he drops are hilarious. I haven't figured out if he's a smart dumbass, or a dumb smart person. That's part of his appeal, like you can see his mind working but he doesn't have the vocabulary to express it very well.

That being said, I don't think his standup is great. Much like Rogan, he's a better interviewer than comic.

Always liked clips of his podcast and his Netflix stand up specials. Saw him live and he was a complete bomb live. Soured me on him a bit.

He's not a good standup comedian at all. He's a really good podcaster, but without that podcast he wouldn't even be able to book the places he books, much less headline them. That isn't unique to him. There are quite a few bad comedians with successful podcasts that get booked for places and shows they otherwise have no chance of doing.

Yea I didn't realize that until I saw him live. He reused some of his funny stuff from his podcast on his Netflix special which was fine. It got some laughs out of me so when he came here me and Mrs. Iwy went to see him. We've always liked going to stand ups.

Before he came out some guy comes out and says don't shout out during his routine. Well about 1/3 of the way in after some joke someone let out a "Wooo" during the laughs. He stops his routine. Just pauses for like a minute. He picks it back up and a little later during some laughs a girl shouts out "We love you". He stops his routine this time and paces around saying how uncool it was to do this. It was so awkward. He completely lost his audience and the entire packed out place barely laughed at anything after that. He tried to recover towards the end by apologizing for acting like that but it was too late. Dude just sucked. Gtfo you're in the wrong business if you can't handle a little "Woo" from someone.
