However, the airport will only offer flights to five destinations until an expanded opening on Dec 29, from when it is expected to handle up to 90 million passengers a year, rising to 200 million when all facilities are completed in 2028.

That would be nearly double the number of passengers moving through the world's current busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson in the US city of Atlanta.

The first flight from the as-yet-unnamed airport will be to Ankara on Thursday.

If Turkey keeps sliding down the path that it’s going it won’t be.

Judging by Google Earth they are also building a massive loop including a new bridge.

Do you see that shite, Baton Rouge?

Can handle and will handle are two different things.

How is it already the world's busiest if it hasn't even opened yet?

This, lol. Let's let them open and get real time before we start projecting something in that part of the world to be the busiest.

I understand the city is huge, but why is it such a busy airport? Is it a hub between Asian and Europe?

The first time I landed in Atlanta years back I walked the entire length of the airport and then realized there was a train underneath.

ATL flew over 100 million passengers in 2017. Truly astonishing.

If you walked in the Transportation Mall tunnel, I don't know how you missed it, it was right next to you.

Istanbul? Only for the last 2500 years or so.

I had the misfortune to be in the international part of Shiphol and several plane loads of Turks were being sent along the corridors because of gate changes.

That airport is going to need massive air exchangers and scrubbers to keep the air breathable. The stench of their travelers could only be improved by putting them on camel/dromedary backs.

Turkey could be amazing but their leaders are doing their best to destroy the place.

How? The walkway runs right alongside the train track, so it seems hard to miss. Unless it wasn’t that way a long time ago.

I can also imagine they're going to offer direct flights to Ta'if and the other smaller hubs around Mecca for the Hajj, aiming to translate their relationships with other countries who don't get along with Saudi Arabia, to act as an intermediary for transit.

With more and more Muslims spilling out of the Middle East into Europe and further abroad.
