So, I see why you might've thought what you said in the OP (depending on how you were exposed to the word), but I don't think they're that close to being considered true synonyms. Sketch is another word that might fall in this category, where it might have a racist connotation in some contexts, but generally should not be viewed this way.
This guy gets it.

Janky, at least how I use it, means trashy/shitty/subpar.
Posted on 11/10/21 at 1:35 pm to go_tigres
Yeah I guess how I was exposed to it it sounded like the person would have otherwise said ghetto.

Nah. Doesn't sound right.

Some folks would say ratchet, but I say sketchy. Others say the "hood" .

My theory on this word is that white people made it up so they could stop saying "ghetto," which they realized (or were told) was a racist term. But they mean "ghetto."
I have used "Janky" for stuff for decades with no correlation to the color of the perpetrator. I use it more for stuff that is cobbled together with bailing wire and duct tape...than anything else.

what about "jerry rigged" ?
Was originally "Jury Rigged" but evolved and then got attributed to insulting Germans. It originated as a sailing term (referring to a temporary "Jury Mast").

I prefer janky-arse. Like my company has janky-arse servers cause they keep crashing.

WTH is this? A non-genius why of pronouncing wretched?

First time I ever heard the word was in 1989 when Eddie Murphy used it in Harlem Nights.

Btw Ice Cube or whoever didn't invent the term. It's been a while for a long time. It's like saying Faulkner invented ya'll... Which btw is how he spelled it. Webster was a Yankee and put it in the dictionary/autocorrect wrong.

It's possible my theory holds no water.
Your thread holds less water than a janky, upside-down colander.

Wow, we have a scholar here.

It's a niche thread. Bombs away
My theory is that you’re a sensitive dork with too much time on your hands that needs to start a hobby. I still say ghetto all the time, and I don’t really care if it offends weird white people like you

Not sure, BBF, I've heard it most commonly as a synonym for hinky or squirrelly, less commonly for shady, unreliable (mechanically) or even broken/poorly functioning.
Ghetto euphemisms are mainly some riff on "urban" or "street", or otherwise Ebonics references.
Maybe just my limited experience.

I thought it meant "questionable".
Posted on 11/10/21 at 6:30 pm to baybeefeetz
I thought it was a twist on the word "skanky" .
Posted on 11/10/21 at 6:55 pm to baybeefeetz
Redd Foxx said it in Harlem Nights. I think he called Quick that ‘janky little rat’or something like that. That’s the first time I remember hearing it. We quoted that for months after seeing the movie.
