They've come along way.

I can recall a peculiar request for information to us back in 2009: "The USAF would like to know if, in your folks' experience, non-pilot O-3s (Captains) would be able to pilot your fleet of drones?"

We looked at each other and laughed at the reponse, "Well, we have non-pilot E-6s (Staff Sergeants) do it in the Army, so no reason your O-3s can't do it."

Good times...

Back in the mid- 80’s there was a QF-100 full size drone which flew out of the test side of the base.
Plane was named “Atilla The Hun”

It had not been shot down for many years due to the guys flying it in the mobile van putting it into various moves that would break lock of Aim-9’s and Aim-7’s launched from attacking F-15’s.

Word had it that the Eagle drivers would raise hell because it was performing maneuvers that a piloted a/c wouldn’t be able to do or the pilot would have blacked out, thus making it “unfair”. Quite the conundrum….

and THAT was FORTY..YEARS…AGO!

(Hell, 777 may have been one of them )

What happens when the communication links are interrupted controlling the autonomous drones? Seems like the communication system will be the weak point in the upcoming drone wars.

In Ukraine they have drones with several mile long fiberoptic cables to prevent signal jamming.

I was watching CNBC and Cramer (I know, I know) made a good point. Current human piloted aircraft are built with secondary and tertiary redundancies to protect the pilot. If there’s no pilot to protect, these aren’t necessary, thus reducing the cost.

Then they’ll make them completely autonomous with “on-board processing” that doesn’t need a connection and can act independently.

This all sounds familiar…like someone made a horrifying movie about this once.

The year is 2055 and you hear the fast approach of a U.S. military drone that was notified by your smart Amazon refrigerator that someone in your house made disparaging remarks about President Hunter Biden

kind of shocked that there hasn't been some kind of crazy terrorist attack with a drone(s) yet

Kiev has already experienced this. Not fun for civilians (or soldiers)

I, for one, welcome my new drone-y overlords.

And, while we’re talking, I don’t have to fly to a funeral next Summer in the Maritimes, Delta.

How long before they stick an R-2 unit in the fuselage behind the pilot's canopy?

Except to do what R-2 do, you'd probably only need a unit the size of a Coke can. No where near as photogenic!
