This is the main reason VA and MD are so high on the list.

Overall there is a very poor correlation to being a taker state and scoring high. 4 of the top ten are giver states, 3 are below the average in taking and only 3 are above average in taking. 4 of the 5 bottom states are also 4 of the 5 largest taker states.

It's not that you're smug deaf, it's that most people dont wear their politics and personal beliefs as openly in person as they do here. Normal people co-exist just fine.

That's not saying much. And based on your other posts I've seen, you're centrist at the most, if not a bit to the left.

What I'm talking about is being a solid southern conservative. You'll get a far different reception, and I've seen it first hand. I was given some leeway because I'm libertarian. Some of my friends/family? Not so much. You keep your politics close to your chest in that part of the country if you're conservative. When i'm in Seattle (frequently because wife is from there and her family's there), I stay away from any economic discussion. Learned that lesson the hard way.

No, you're just not conservative. Nothing wrong with that.

Have you even been to Seattle? Politics is EVERYWHERE.

I lean pretty libertarian but much more conservative than progressive. My FIL is a central Alabama redneck and loves to talk politics over beers and cigars.

Being centerist is more conservative than a lot of people here, especially in my age bracket.

I'm also openly supportive of capitalism, which has created problems. But quoting back a bunch of Marxist theorists to my super left-wing friends always leads to them changing the subject. Which is pleasing in its own way.

I definitely didn't mean to imply that people here can't be smug. They can. All I'm saying is I haven't experienced it myself.

I know that Louisiana is near last in almost every measurement, and it drives me crazy because I feel like there’s so much potential here with the mouth of the Mississippi at our disposal, along with access to oil and gas, hunting and amazing fishing both inland and offshore along with the fore-mentioned festivals, etc.

That's the most frustrating part of this. What is equally frustrating is that for reasons I will NEVER understand, Edwin Edwards (who you have to thank for starting the plummet to these rankings) is still celebrated around the state. It is the worst case of Stockholm Syndrome I've ever seen.

I have a lot of Seattle friends and their political beliefs are bat shite. I utterly refuse to talk politics anymore when I go there

My sister is a left winger that lives in Austin so she's right at home. I usually avoid talking politics with her although I admittedly did troll her on Facebook when she was at the women's march with my 10 year old niece.

I like Seattle, for a city, but the people are difficult to warm up to in general. It wasn't always like this, seems it's creeped in the past 20 years or so. Used to travel there on business quite a bit and it's just a bit off, socially.

Juneau which is like a mini Seattle is the exact opposite.

Great example why the feds need to step in and offer to relocate AAs if they choose. Stop fighting wars in the ME and invest that money into our most impoverished community. Mericans first.
